BIOGAS
 Biogas is a clean and efficient fuel.
 It is typically refers to a mixture of different
gases produced by the breakdown of organic
matter in the absence of oxygen.
 Biogas can be produced from raw materials
such as agricultural waste, manure,
municipal waste ,plant material, sewage,
green waste or food waste.
 It is a renewable energy source, it is a
mixture of
 Methane
BIOGAS
 Carbon dioxide
 Hydrogen
 Hydrogen Sulphide
 The chief constituent of biogas is
methane(65%)
APPROVED TECHNOLOGIES
FOR BIOGAS PRODUCTION
 There are two types of biogas plants in
usage for the production of biogas. These
are:
 The fixed Dome type of biogas plants
 The floating gas holder type of biogas plants
FIXED DOME TYPE OF BIOGAS
PLANTS
 The fixed dome type is also popularly
known as the “Deenbandhu Model”.
 The fixed dome type consists of a dome
constructed of concrete, known at the
digester tank.
 This dome is fixed and thus it is called
fixed dome type of biogas plant. The
feedstock along with the water is mixed in
the mixing tank to form the slurry and
allowed to ferment.
FIXED DOME TYPE OF BIOGAS
PLANTS
 Once the pressure is enough within the
dome, the gas can be taken out from
outlet.
 The used slurry expands and overflow
tank.
FIXED DOME TYPE BIO-GAS
PLANT
FLOATING DOME TYPE
BIOGAS PLANTS
 The floating gasholder type is also popularly
known as “Indian Khadi And Village
Industries Commission (KVIC) model”.
 The digester is constructed, which is divided
into two parts. One part is an inlet, from
where the slurry is fed to the tank, the other
is steel that floats on the slurry and collects
the gas generated.
 Hence it is called floating gas-holder type of
biogas plant.
FLOATING DOME TYPE
BIOGAS PLAN
The slurry is fermentation and as gas
produced by the bacterial fermentation, the
pressure inside increases. The gas is
collected from the outlet pipe and utilized.

ADVANTAGES OF BIOGAS AS A
FUEL
 High calorific value
 Clean fuel
 No residue produced
 No smoke produced
 Non pollution
 Economical
 Can be supplied through pipe lines
 Burns readily- has a convenient ignition
temperature
USES OF BIOGAS
 Domestic fuel
 For street lighting
 Generation of electricity
 If compressed, it can be replaced
compressed natural gases for use in
vehicles.
ADVANTAGES OF BIOGAS
PLANTS
 Reduces burden on forests and fossil fuels
 Produces a clean fuel- helps in controlling
air pollution.
 Provides nutrient rich(N and P) manure
for plants
 Control water pollution by decomposing
sewage, animal dung and human excreta.
LIMITATION OF BIOGAS
PLANTS
 Initial cost of installation of the plant is
high.
 Number of cattle owned by an average
family of farmer is inadequate to feeda
biogas plant.
RECENT DEVELOPMENTS
 With the many benefits of biogas, it is starting to
become a popular source of energy and is starting
to be used in the united states more.
 On 5 october 2010, biogas was injected into the
UK gas grid for the first time. As of september
2013, there are about 130 non-sewage biogas
plants in the UK.
 To create awareness and associate the people
interested in biogas, the Indian Biogas Association
was formed. India’s Ministry of new and
Renewable Energy offers some subsidy per model
constructed.
CONCLUSION
 Biogas is a clean source of energy. Biogas
plants have been in operation for a long
period of time, especially in rural areas
around the globe. The research organizations
should focus on newer efficient low cost
designs. The government can play important
role by introducing different legal
frameworks, education schemes and the
availability creating more awareness and
providing more subsidies.
