TITLE

ASSESSMENT AND REDESIGNING OF

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM OF LA FERME
DE LA SALLE IN GALA, OZAMIZ CITY
BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

 La Ferme De La Salle is a farmstead property owned by

La Salle University.

 It has a vast land area covering approximately ten

hectares.

 Several buildings and facilities are already established

in La Ferme De La Salle but most of these
infrastructures don’t have proper electrical plan.

Hence, the main purpose of this research is to provide
a complete electrical system design that would cater
the current loads and the future loads anchoring it
with the latest Philippine Electrical Code (PEC 2017)
standards.
REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

Electrical Plan for Agricultural and Farms Occupancies

(Badger State Consulting & Janikowski, 2016)

• the document layout presented a large Electrical System Design

for farms
• implementation starts after checking the site, getting electrical
loads, design lighting loads, and load analysis for electric cables
sizing
Underground Electricity and Communication Infrastructure
(Bajaj, 2016)

• basics of underground distribution feeder design, analysis at

underground systems, construction, and operation

• discussed specifications of certain underground cables

Electrical Safety on Farms
(Hallman & Chamberlain, 2017)

• discussed installation on farm's electrical system that is

essential to electrical safety

• maintaining electrical system by regularly checking and

replacing immediately any damage or deterioration
Short Circuit Current Calculation in Low Voltage Systems
(Nasir, 2019)

In this paper, a short circuit current of an example of

low voltage system is calculated accurately by utilizing
two methods; calculation method and graphical
method
Solar Powered LED Street Lighting System
(Baburajan, AlZharooni, & Osman, 2017)

• In the project, the proposed solution is to replace all the

conventional lamps with LED fixtures in AUS (American
University of Sharjah)

• solar energy is used to charge the battery during daytime and

gives-off energy to the LEDs light equipment at night
Branch-Circuit, Feeder, And Service Calculations (PEC, 2017)

The diagram provides the general

requirements for calculation methods.
In Part 2.20.2, it provides calculation
methods for branch circuit loads. Parts
2.20.3 and 2.20.4 provide calculation
methods for feeders and services.
Lastly, Part 2.20.5 provides calculation
methods for farms
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

La Ferme De La Salle has not developed an adequate

and proper electrical system design and even operates
under a not well-planned electrical system
PROJECT OBJECTIVES

 to assess the existing loads, material quality,

and electrical works based on PEC standards
PROJECT OBJECTIVES

 to redesign the entire electrical system of La Ferme De La

Salle based on the latest Philippine Electrical Code (PEC)
Standards that has:
1. Mini substation design
2. Underground power source feeder design
3. Perimeter Lighting and Renewable Energy powered
Outdoor Lighting System
4. Load Schedule
5. Voltage drop analysis
6. Short circuit analysis
PROJECT OBJECTIVES

 provide project cost estimates

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

• the study benefits the institution of LSU in such a way that the La
Ferme De La Salle could have a proper electrical system design

• this study will be significant and relevant for the current site
development plan

• the institution could utilize La Ferme as venue for graduate or

undergraduate activities given that is provided with an
appropriate and standard based electrical system design.
PROJECT SCOPE AND LIMITATIONS

• The research design project aims to assess and redesign

the electrical system of La Ferme De La Salle based
on the latest edition of the Philippine Electrical Code
(PEC, 2017)

• the design project does not include the system

monitoring
METHODS
Data Gathering

The researchers will focus on the collection of the data at the site. The
researchers will:
• identify the number of buildings
• count the lighting outlets, convenience outlets, air-conditioning
units, and other necessary electrical loads
• identify the conduit and conductor sizes and circuit breakers
being used
• check the capacity of the transformer
• electric bills since the site is energized
Electrical Assessment

The researchers will analyze and calculate the total demand and
full load current from the gathered data to identify if the current
loads are beyond transformer capacity.
Redesigning of Electrical System

After the Assessment the researchers will :

• design a new electrical system that will be based from the latest
version of Philippine Electrical Code

• include adequate lighting system for driveways and perimeter

areas

• conduct a cost estimate and financial analysis for the farm’s new
electrical plan
Plan Projection

The researchers will draft a ten-year time frame to

check that the design is still efficient for the next ten
years
USEFUL FORMULAS FOR VOLTAGE DROP CALCULATIONS
Voltage Drop(1Φ) = IRcosΦ + IXsinΦ

Voltage Drop(3Φ)= 3 x (IRcosΦ + IXsinΦ)

Where:
V = is the voltage drop in the circuit
I = is the current flowing in conductor
R = is the line resistance for one conductor, in ohms
X = is the line reactance for one conductor, in ohms
Φ = is the angle whose cosine is the load power factor
cosΦ = is the load power factor, in decimals
sinΦ = is the load reactive factor, in decimals
TABLE FOR A.C. RESISTANCE AND REACTANCE FOR 600-V CABLES, 3-PHASE,60HZ,75˚C-
THREE SINGLE CONDUCTORS IN CONDUIT
TABLE FOR DETERMING THE NUMBER OF CONDUCTORS IN A CONDUIT
SHORT CIRCUIT CALCULATION PROCEDURE
• Prepare a system one-line diagram showing all elements to be
included in the analysis
• Prepare an impedance diagram showing the system impedances,
most short circuit calculations show impedance in per-unit on a
common MVA base.
• Develop an equivalent circuit of the “outside world”
• Calculate the symmetrical short-circuit current at the buses of
concern
• Apply appropriate multiplying factors to symmetrical short-circuit
currents, as required to reflect the asymmetry of the short-circuit
current.
BASIC POINT-TO-POINT CALCULATION PROCEDURE

STEP 1. Determine the transformer full load amps(F.L.A.) from the nameplate
STEP 2. Find the transformer multiplier(%Z)

STEP 3. Determine the the transformer let-through short circuit current

STEP 4. Find the “ f ” factor
STEP 5. Calculate the “ M ” (multiplier) or take from Table 2

STEP 6. Calculate the available short circuit symmetrical RMS current

at the point of fault. ( Add motor contribution if applicable )
