“Liars go to hell”. Definitely, we do not mean that
liars go to hell but we understand why it is
associated with “hell”. Lying does not only offend
but can destroy basic relationship, without which,
no possible care and love would take place. For
this, we do not like liars. They cannot be trusted,
and are unworthy of true friendship.
WHAT IS LYING?
Lying is saying or doing what is untrue with the
intention of deceiving.
Even with the presence of different gadgets, we still
prefer to have someone to talk to, someone who
responds and reacts to what we say.
 Unfortunately, the time we spend chatting with people becomes an
opportunity to boast our accomplishments, put down others we
diskike, and exaggerate matters to get the sympathy of the
listeners.
 We start to lie and sin. Lying has the sole purpose of serving oneself
by misrepresentation, deceit, and falsity. It may be done throughout
words or actions.
Why do we LIE?
Though the reasons why we lie are manifold, it
starts with self-deception.
We lie when there is a gap that we cannot
accept between who we are and what we
want to be, what we want to have for ourselves
and for others.
What are the different lies
according to kinds,
motivations, and situations?

Defamation is a lie against our neighbor. It is taking away
or lessening an another man’s fame unjustly.
Defamation has five kinds, namely: calumny or slander,
detraction, gossip and backbiting, tale bearing, and
derision.
 Calumny or slander : It injures reputation by stories that
are not true and consists of accusing a person of faults
of which he/she is not guilty of.
 Detraction :It is the unjust revelation of the person’s
hidden faults or defects blackening his/her reputation.
 Gossip or backbiting: It is the criticism about real and
known effect and by itself is not unjust.
Tale-bearing : It is a speech unfavorable
to another person, secretly made, with the
purpose of breaking up a vood
relationship.DD
 Derision : It is a jest or a prank that
accuses another eith some defect in his
presence with the purpose of putting him
to confusion.
What is a secret?
A secret is something that is known privately to
a person or only a few persons.
Some kinds of secrets are:
 Natural Secret
A Promised Secret
An entrusted secret
Confessional secret
Seal of confession
What does the Church call us about
lying?
Lying is contrary to who God is. “I am the truth”. (John 14:6)
