Smart Grid &

Advanced Metering Infrastructure

Solution capabilities

.
Background
India has inherited British’s power distribution system and enhanced over
6 decades. As on today, transmission loss across states in india on
average is around 27%, that can be reduced to 9%.

Maintenance cost is been increased due to the following reasons.

1. Power Theft
2. Traditional Power grid management system
3. Losses due to Billing Manipulations
4. Higher maintenance cost ( Manpower & Operations)

Smart Grid solution depicts that deployment of Smart Meter, Smart

Transformer, Smart Grid along with IoT cloud, big data and business
application integration. This is to improvise current infrastructure.

What is Smart Grid ?
Smart Grid is digital technology that enables current infrastructure such that it can be
monitored, extract data and controlled remotely

1. Smart Grids are advanced Transmission &

Distribution networks based on the integration of Business Applications
Information and Communications technology
IT Infrastructure
2. Delivers electricity to consumers using two- way
digital technology which enables efficient
Communications
management of both end- use & grid- use

3. Capable of monitoring & responding to changes in Measurement devices

(Sensors, PMU, PDCs etc)
everything from power plants to customer
preferences to individual appliances
Electrical Infrastructure

4. It impacts the entire value chain from equipment

manufacturing to sales and is not just restricted to
transmission & distribution

Benefits of Smart Grid to Utilities
Traits Traditional Grid Smart Grid
Loss Inability to address the problem of very Prevents disruptions, minimizes impact, more of consumer participation thus
Reduction high AT& C losses in India plaguing the having a proactive approach for better energy management and energy
Discoms accounting. Being Smart, leakage can be detected quickly and prevented.

Department Human resource required for bill Auto Billing & Transformer maintenance reduces human dependency and
Benefits generation & Transformer Maintenance increase efficiency by 25 %

Peak Reactive approach. Utilities tend to Smart Grid technology enable utilities to reduce purchase of costly power,
Reduction purchase high cost power during peak avoid paying UI charge and maintain grid discipline
hours and pay UI charges as well

Integration of Classic grid s were designed for one- way Allows individual consumers to generate power onsite and feed into the grid
DG with flow of electricity without raising reverse flow reliability and safety issues Capacity to integrate
system electricity generated through solar wind and motor vehicles.

Reliability of Post breakdown repair Self healing. Power quality a priority with a variety of quality/price options
supply according to needs

Consumer Less consumer participation due to non- Consumer can optimize monthly bill
Benefits price visibility, rare time-of-day pricing rare,
few choices. Consumer is user

Rural Provision of Electricity in rural areas is still Micro Grids and efficient use of available supply will pave the way for
Outreach an issue. increasing the outreach of electricity

Quality of Limited efforts for quality of supply Quality parameters can be monitored and controlled at each node point

The Distribution segment continues to carry
electricity from the point where transmission leaves
Distribution off

Distribution continues to be the weakest link in the power

sector.

Distribution Loss of Discoms have increased from Rs. 27000 Cr in 2006-

07 to Rs. 60000 Cr in 2011-12

Private Distribution
State Utilities
Licensees Franchisees Principle reason for above loss- Huge AT & C losses of 27%
compared to 10% average in developed countries

TATA Power,
Torrent Power
State DISCOMs Reliance Energy
etc
etc The Govt. has invested heavily in various schemes to bring
the losses to <15%

Private sector participation in 2 ways- PPP & DF

(Distribution Franchisee)

The Govt. has ambitious plans to double the distribution

network by the end of 12th Plan

Issues/Concerns with Discom
Theft/ Losses

• In areas where SCADA has not been setup (378-135=243), there are huge theft losses
• No mechanism available to detect & report above problems, cost- effective solutionsneeded

Underground cable fault detection

• During rains, faults occur in a number of undergroundcables

• Solutions needed to detect such faults

Energy saving/ losses reduction mechanisms

• Any mechanisms needed which will directly have an effect on T&C losses

Auto Disconnect/ Alarm

• Cost- effective solutions needed to caution customers who default on bill- Automatically- Either through warning signal in
meters, sms, calls etc

GIS data integration (quick)

• Currently it takes hours (more than 4-5 hrs) for the GIS data sent by various substations to integrate and arrive at the
Centre
• Cost- effective solutions needed to ensure that it updates withinminutes

Synchronization issues

• In case of failure/issues of some generation facility, power is borrowed from nearby states/ IPPs
• As and when in-house generation is restored, power supply disrupts due to asynchronised frequencies
between both supplies
• Mechanisms needed to synchronise both these frequencies automatically
Substation Data at Central location

• MahaDiscom has 2500 substations of 33kV (with/ without SCADA)

• It is required to have data of all substations at central location
• Data regarding feeder working/ not working, loading & its breakdown and other important parameters like
spinning reserve, VRT, peak load characteristics etc
