for class to conduct the translation for 2 articles).
In your presentation:
- Introduce the topic of the articles and relevant background
information
- Present key words and suggest the target language
equivalents
- Allow time for class to practice
- Give feedback to your friends’ translation
- Suggest the correct answers

= a minus of 0.5 from your INDIVIDUAL group work score (This
doesn’t affect the score of any other member in your group).
E.g: Your initial group work score is 8 and you’ve been absent
twice => Your final group work score is 7
Q&A?
Translation Tactics and
Techniques
Vnese active voice <->
Eng passive voice
Generally speaking, passive sentences are more
commonly used in English, and retaining the
passive voice when translating a text into
Vietnamese may, to a certain extent, render the
translation unnatural in style.
Example:
Napa Valley is known for its excellent wines.
Người ta biết đến thung lũng Napa nhờ vào những
loại rượu hảo hạng (được sản xuất tại đây).
Vnese subject as human agent <->
Eng subject as non-human agent
In English, the subject is usually the direct agent of
a certain action whereas Vietnamese subject is
highly likely to be a person, i.e. a human agent.
Example:
ED Sheeran tickets for his massive new tour go
on sale today!
Mọi người có thể bắt đầu mua vé xem chuyến lưu
diễn hoành tráng của Ed Sheeran ngay hôm nay!
Vnese verbs <-> Eng prepositions
Example:
Are you with me? (a teacher to students)
Các trò có theo kịp bài không? / Các em có hiểu kịp
những gì tôi nói không?
Vnese verbs <-> Eng nouns
Example:
Uber announces partnership with Mercedes-Benz.
Uber tuyên bố hợp tác làm ăn với Mercedes-Benz.
Vnese complex sentences <->
Eng simple sentences
In some cases, a Vietnamese complex sentence
can be translated into an English simple
sentence.
Example:
Khi bọn trẻ biết giáo viên quan tâm đến mình, chúng sẽ
tập trung hơn trong việc học.
The awareness of teachers’ care is likely to result in
students’ better concentration on learning.
Vnese compound sentences <->
Eng complex sentences
In some cases, a Vietnamese compound sentence
can be translated into an English complex sentence.
Example:
Giỗ Tổ Hùng Vương là ngày hội toàn quốc, toàn dân, và trong
tâm thức, dân gian Việt Nam xem nó mang tính thiêng liêng cao
cả nhất.
Hung Kings’ Death Anniversary, which is a nationwide cultural and
historical celebration of Vietnamese people, bear a sacred and
important meaning in our social – cultural life.
Paraphrasing
When translate certain vocabulary items, it is preferable
to look for and thoroughly understand their definitions
and usages in contexts and use vocabulary items that
bear the same meaning in the target language.
Example:
Không kể dù lạ hay quen, dù có hay không có địa vị
trong xã hội, khách cũng đều được gia chủ tiếp đón ân
cần như nhau và được thể hiện sự quí trọng.
Guests of diverse background are greatly appreciated
and heartily welcomed.
Time words
Example:
Tháng 5/2014, khách sạn 5 sao Pullman Đà Nẵng đã đón
nhận chứng chỉ “Dịch vụ xuất sắc” của TripAdvisor.
