Seven (7) Major Actions Steps
Action Step One
Determine a specific speech goal that is
adopted to your audience and occasion.
-Involves 4 activities:
1) Selecting a topic
2) Analyzing the audience
3) Analyzing the occasion
4) Clearly stating the goal
4 Activities Expounded
1) Select a topic from a subject area you
know something about & that is
important to you.
- and that you can relate to your
audience’s needs and interests.
- think about your own humorous or
dramatic experiences and select one you
think the audience would enjoy hearing
about.

2) Analyze your audience
-gather demographic information that will help to
predict audience interests, knowledge and
attitudes.
-after gathering info – the average age, gender,
education, occupation, income, race, religion,
geographic uniqueness, nationality & group
affiliation you can assess the kind of materials
the audience is likely to response to.

3) Analyze your occasion
- the relevant questions are the:
- the size of the audience
- when the speech will be given
- where the speech will be given
- the facilities necessary to give a
speech
- the time limit & specific assignment

4) Articulate your goal. . .by determining the
response that you want from your
audience.
-general goal- that your audience enjoy
the material, understand information,
believe something or behave in a specific
way;
- specific goal – the response that you
want from the audience.
Gathering Materials
Action Step Two
- Draw materials from your experiences,
observations, interviews, surveys &
research.
- Use narrative
- Note: “Dialogue adds interests to any
speech.”
Developing a Strategy
Action Step Three
- Develop a strategy adapting material to
your specific speech audience.
- a strategy the increase the audience’s
perception of you as a credible source,
build & maintain audience interest in your
information, & in some cases, motivate
your audience to act on what you have
said.
Organizing Material
Action Step Four
- Develop your material that best suits
your particular audience.
- Organized speech: beginning, middle
and end:
a) Body/middle- presents main points;
Organized- chronological, spacial, topical;
use phrase transition.
Action step 4 continued:
- Introduction – that both gets attention &
leads into the body of the speech.
-May be asking questions?, etc.
- Conclusion – that both summarizes the
material and leaves the speech on a high
note. A speech conclusion that reminds
the audience of what you have said and
hits home in such a way that the audience
will remember your words.

Refine the speech outline.
- It is important to outline the speech on
paper to help you test the logic & clarity of
your proposed organization.
- Outline includes – key parts of the intro;
the main points & sub-points of the body
and the key parts of the conclusion.
Selecting a Wording
Action Step Five

- Select clear, vivid, emphatic, and


appropriate wording for the speech.

- The audience will have a clear & vivid


mental picture of the events.
Creating Visual Aids
Action Step Six
- Create visual aids to clarify, emphasize,
& dramatize verbal information.
