LESSON 1:

Solving Quadratic Equation

by Extracting Square Roots
Quadratic Equation (QE)
• A Quadratic Equation (QE) is an equation of the second
degree, meaning it contains at least one term that is squared.

QE General Form: ax² + bx + c = 0

real numbers and a≠0

x is an unknown variable.
Identify which of the following equations are quadratic equations.

1. 6x² + 11x + 35 = 0

2. 4x² + 81 = 0 QE without linear term ax² + c = 0

3. x – 3y² = 0 There are 2 different variables involved

4. 6x² + 11x = 35 QE in a form ax² + bx = c

5. √x + 4 = 7 No quadratic term, rather it contains a rational exponent

QE, using proportion, it could give us the equation

6. x = 1
x² -x - 2 = 0
x+2 x
Perfect Square
-An integer is said to be a perfect square if it is the square of an
integer.

For example,
100 is a perfect square because it is a square of an integer 10
10²=100.

To make it simple:
-A perfect square is the number that is a product of two equal integers.
10 x 10= 10²= 100
Perfect Square

36 because 6 x 6 = 36

82

9 because 3 x 3 = 9

17

25 because 5 x 5 = 25
Square Root
• A square root is written with a radical symbol and the number
or expression inside the radical symbol is called the radicand.
Square Root
• All positive real numbers has two square roots, one positive
square root and one negative square root with equal absolute
values.

±5 read as “plus and minus five”

• The positive square root is referred to as the principal square

root.
Squares, Square roots

The inverse operation of squaring a number is the square root

( √) of that number.
Squares, Square roots

√a can be written as a1/2

Therefore;
√a² is same as (a²)1/2

a
½
√a² = 2 . 1 2
= = 1
=(a²) 2 2

=a
Determine the roots of the ff. QE

Example:

√x²= √81 √x²= √49

x = ±9 x = ±7

Try this yourself…

x² = 36 x²=-9
if x < 0 there will
√x²= √36 x = 3i
be no real roots /
x = ±6
Imaginary
Determine the roots of the ff. QE
Example:

x² -16= 0 x²-36= 0
√x² = √16 √x² = √36
x = ±4 x = ±6
Try this yourself…
x²-9= 0 x²-64= 0
x = ±3 x = ±8
Determine the roots of the ff. QE
Example:

2x² = 128
2 2
√ x² = √64
x = ±8

Try this yourself…

4x²-676= 0
x = ±13
Determine the roots of the ff. QE

Try this yourself…

2(x-5)² = 32 √(x+7)² = √196
2 2
x+7 = ± 14
√(x-5)² = √16 x = ± 14-7
x = 14 - 7 x = -14 - 7
x-5 = ± 4
x=7 x = -21
x =±4+5

x=4+5 x = -4 + 5
x=9 x=1
Determine the roots of the ff. QE

Try this yourself…

x² - 10 = 2 9x² - 8 = 0
x² = 2 + 10 9x² = 8
√x² = √12 9 9
x = ± √4 * √3
x = ± 2 √3
√ x² =
9
8

x = ± √4 * √2
3
x = ± 2 √2
