In Portugal, there are two forms of address: formal and informal.

This is often called a T–V distinction.

Informal: We use the subject pronoun tu to speak to friends, family, and colleagues.
Example: Tu estudas português?

Formal: For more formal situations, we omit the pronoun você (3rd person singular). We
use only the verb form, which may be preceded by a vocative. We can also use o senhor
or a senhora before the verb form, instead of você.
Examples: Sara, toma um café?
A senhora toma um café?
Paulo, estuda em Lisboa?
O senhor estuda em Lisboa?
