Importance of OSH
OSH is important based on 3 arguments; 1) It is the
right thing to do, 2) It is the smart thing to do, and
3) It is the law (WHO, 2010)
Importance of OSH
“It is the right thing to do”
This is based on ethical principle in that the
employer, while earning profit, has the moral
obligation to protect employees from accidents and
illnesses.

OSH Statistics
According to the International Labor Organization
(ILO) during the world safety day celebration in
2019:
● Average of 7,500 die every day due to work-
related accidents
● 160 million incidents od occupational illness
every year
● 270 million work-related accidents every year.
OSH Statistics
The biggest killer is cancer, causing roughly
640,000 or 32% of deaths, followed by circulatory
diseases at 23% then accidents at 19% and
communicable diseases at 17%.
Example:
A maintenance worker performing task in less than
10 ft away from a live wire.
Exposure Hazards
Exposure Hazards can be:
- Physical – When a worker is generally within
arm’s length. (Example. Unguarded rotating
machine)
- Environmental- When a worker is in an unhealthy
atmosphere. (Example: extremely hot working
areas)

Fatalism, which is a belief that accidents are bound
to happen are not the real causes of accidents.

And the truth is most accidents happen because they
have not been prevented. According to W.H. Heirich
Accidents are 98% preventable and 2% non-
preventable.
