Economy Background
• Used to be one of wealthiest countries 100 years ago

• Argentina suffered during most of the 20th century from recurring

economic crises, persistent fiscal and current account deficits, high
inflation, mounting external debt, and capital flight.

• The Convertibility Plan, which had basically pegged the peso to the
US dollar for a decade, collapsed in 2002 as a result of the
combination of a large fiscal deficit and a substantial decrease in
commodities prices.

• Interim President Adolfo RODRIGUEZ SAA declared a default -

the largest in history - on the government's foreign debt in
December 2001

7
Economy
• Argentina experienced 5-year steady growth period fueled by high
commodities prices and low leverage. These two factors were key
to the rapid recovery of the economy after the 2002 financial crisis.

• Argentina has a market-oriented economy with abundant natural

resources , a well-educated population , an export-oriented
agricultural sector and a relatively diversified industrial base.

• The country is classified as upper-middle income or a secondary

emerging market by World Bank.

• Argentina is one of G-20 major economies and founding member of

United Nations.

• Argentina has, after its neighbour Chile, the second-highest Human

Development Index and GDP per capita in purchasing power
