An Alarming

Global
phenomenon
- SRUJAN 2 / 4 EEE
Questions that arise…
• What is e-waste?
• What’s difference between waste
&
 e-waste?
• The effects it may cause to the
environment
• Then how to dispose it off?
• Why no measures in local scale
has been taken in India?
• Role of an individual, govt for a
Classification of e-
waste
• Mobiles • CD
• Computer • Sensors
• TV • Motherboard
• Calculators • Servers
• Speakers • Microwave
• Scanners • Washing machines
• Printers • Audio, video players
• Air conditioner • Alarm
• Catridges • Security devices

Wealth from waste
 Hazardous  Non-Hazardous
• Lead • Tin
• Mercury • Copper
• Americium • Aluminium
• Cadmium • Iron
• Beryllium oxide • Germanium
• Polyvinyl chloride • Silicon
• Gold
• Silver
• Lithium
Effects due to hazardous
elements
• Lead dumped into water pollutes
underground water and it attacks
v nervous system in adults & children
v develops blood anemia, kidney damages,
severe stomach
v aches, brain damage and also may lead
to death
• Breathing cadmium can lead damage
lungs and leads to death
• Arsenic can cause
v DNA damage
v Asthmatic bronchitis
v Neurotoxic effects in children

Alarming the increase
of stuff’s
• Today there are 770 million mobile users that
accounts to nearly 65% of population.
• The expected growth of mobiles is expected to
be around 200 million by 2011 during year
2002.
• It is estimated that around 30,000 become
obsolete every year what is done to them
they cannot be DELETED .
• In India an estimated e-waste of 1,46,180
metric tonnes is generated every year.
 Delhi-9,730 tonnes Banglore-4,648
tonnes
 Chennai-4,132 tonnes Kolkata -4,025
tonnes
 Ahmedabad-3,827 tonnes Hyderabad-2,833
• Also annually 50,000 tonnes is being imported to
India.
• Out of all this waste only 19,000 tonnes is only
being recycled every year
• Many developed nations dump their waste into the
developing countries.
Role of an individual
• Many of us are addicted to policy “ BUY AND
THROW” of an electronic equipment
• No one gets an idea of repairing them instead
of buying a new one
• Buying the standard company electronic
equipment also try to check for environment
friendly devices
• Raise your helping hand to the mobile
companies that recycle these phones.
 e.g. Nokia
• Reduce the purchase of China products who
concentrate on price than the quality of the
good.
Role of the Govt. for
green globe
• Policies has to be brought out on this e-waste
and its disposal should be thought.
• Recently Tamilnadu has come up with a policy
but no action has been taken till now.
• Recycling in India has been confined to cities
like Bangalore, Chennai… only
• No measures in municipality level have been
taken and these people do follow
conventional methods for their disposal
causing landfills, underground water
pollution etc.
• Strict rules have to be adopted on China
products as they don't maintain quality
