CONSTRUCTION :
 ONE METHOD OF GETTING A MULTI-RATIO EPICYCLIC
GEAR BOX = BY “COMPOUNDING” A NO. OF SIMPLE
EPI-CYCLIC TRAINS

 THE SUN “S1” IS SECURED TO THE INPUT SHAFT “D”,


COUPLED PERMANETLY TO THE ENGINE

 ITS ARM “R1” IS SECURED TO THE OUTPUT SHAFT


“E” ie., COUPLED TO THE DRIVING ROAD WHEELS
PRINCIPLE OF OPERATION OF WILSON GEAR BOX :

 VARIOUSGEAR RATIOS ARE OBTAINED, BY DRIVING THE


ANNULUS “A1”

AT DIFFERENT REDUCTION RATIO SPEEDS IN RELATION TO


THE ENGINE SPEED
1ST GEAR= A1 = 0 rpm

 SUPPOSE THE ENGINE SPEED = 1000 rpm (say constant)

THEN IF THE ANNULUS “A1” IS HELD AT REST [SPEED = 0]

THE SPEED OF THE ARM “R1” = 1000 × S1/(A1 + S1)

 A1 = NO OF TEETH IN A1
 S1 = NO OF TEETH IN S1
 eg : A1= 100 TEETH
S1= 25 TEETH
 THEN THE SPEED OF “R1” = 1000 × 25/(1000+25)
= 200rpm
 AND THE GEAR RATIO = 1000 : 200 = 5:1
2ND GEAR = A1 IS MADE TO RUN AT 100rpm :

 SUPPOSE NOW THAT, THE ANNULUS, INSTEAD OF


BEING HELD AT REST

 IS DRIVEN IN THE SAME DIRECTION AS THE ENGINE AT


SAY 100rpm

 ENGINE SPEED = 1000rpm

 THEN THE SPEED OF THE ARM “R1”= 280rpm INSTEAD


OF 200 rpm
3RD GEAR = “A1” IS MADE TO RUN AT 200rpm :-

 SIMILARLY IF THE SPEED OF THE ANNULUS “A1” = 200rpm

THEN THE SPEED OF THE ARM “R1” = 360rpm

REVERSE GEAR = “A1” IS MADE TO RUN IN OPP0SITE DIRECTION :

 IFTHE ANNULUS “A1” IS DRIVEN IN THE OPPOSITE


DIRECTION TO THE ENGINE

THEN THE ARM “R1” WOULD ROTATE SLOWER THAN,


WHEN THE ANNULUS WAS FIXED
 THUS, IF THE SPEED OF THE ANNULUS “A1” =
400rpm BACKWARDS

THEN, SPEED OF THE ARM “R1”=minus 120rpm


Engine Speed = 1000rpm
THEN THE SPEED OF THE ARM “R1” = 120rpm
BACKWARDS

THUS GIVES A REVERSE GEAR

THUS, BY DRIVING THE ANNULUS “A1” AT DIFFERENT SPEEDS [IN


RELATION TO THE ENGINE SPEED]

 1ST GEAR = “0” BY APPLING BRAKE B1


2ND GEAR = 100 BY APPLING BRAKE B2
3RD GEAR = 200 BY APPLING BRAKE B3
REVERSE GEAR = minus 400 BY APPLING BRKE B4

THE DRIVEN SHAFT “E” ROTATES AT DIFFERENT SPEEDS, GIVING

FIRST AUXILARY EPICYCLIC GEAR TARIN, CONSISTING OF


THE SUN(S2), THE ANNULUS (A2), AND THE ARM CARRIER
(R2) IS USED
1ST GEAR :-
 FORAPPLYING THE FIRST GEAR, THE EPI-CYCLIC GEAR
TRAIN [MAIN TRAIN] HAVING S1, A1 & R1 IS USED
DEDUCE THE 1ST GEAR RATIO :-
 APPLYING THE BRAKE b AND B1

 A1 = FIXED MEMBER
 S1 = DRIVING MEMBER
 R1 = DRIVEN MEMBER

IN THE FIRST AUXILARY TRAIN, THE SUN S2 IS FIXED TO THE


ENGINE SHAFT “D”

THE ANNULUS “A2” CAN BE HELD AT REST BY A BARKE “B2”

AND THE ARM “R2” IS COUPLED TO THE ANNULUS A1


DEDUCE THE 2ND GEAR RATIO :-

 IF
THE ANNULUS A2 IS HELD AT THE REST & THE ENGINE DRIVES
THE SUN S1 & S2
THEN , CONSIDERING THE FIRST AUXILARY TRAIN S2,A2 & R2

IT SHOULD BE CLEAR THAT R2 WILL ROTATE IN THE SAME


DIRECTION AS THE ENGINE BUT AT LOWER SPEED
BUT R2 IS SECURED TO A1
AND SO A1 IS ROTATED [+100rpm] IN THE SAME DIRECTION OF
THE ENGINE[+1000rpm]
AND R1 WILL ROTATE AT HIGHER SPEED, THAN IT DID, ON THE
1ST GEAR[WHEN A1 WAS FIXED]

THUS FOR 2ND GEAR, RELEASE B1 & APPLY B2


HOW TO GET 2ND GEAR RATIO:

 INSTEAD OF FIXING A1

A1 IS ALLOWED TO ROTATED SLOWLY[+100rpm] IN CLOCK WISE


IN DIRECTION OF ENGINE

ROTATION AND AN INCREASED OUTPUT SPEED IS OBTAINED

THIS COMBINED ARRANGEMENT IS CALLED “COMPOUND


PLANETARY GEAR SYSTEM”

 2ND GEAR RATIO = DRIVING SPEED/DRIVEN SPEED

= SPEED OF S2/y

= [S2 + A2]/S2 [ S2(S1+A1)]/[S1 S2+A2 S1 + A1 S2]

2ND GEAR RATIO = (S1+A1)(S2 + A2)/[S1 S2 + A2 S1 + A1 S2]
