ABSTRACT
 The aim of this presentation is the development of action plans for
watershed management.
 Watershed management can be described as a plan to test the
quantity and quality of water on which plant, humans and animals
survive.
 Recent technologies like GIS and remote sensing helps give a
quicker and cost effective analysis for planning various watershed
management activities accurately.
 It will help the planners in better understanding of the problem and
prepare a better environment for sustainable development.
AIM OF THE TOPIC
 Though a large part of earth’s surface is covered with water only 1% of that is fit for human consumption.
 Water is a scarce quantity that is depleting at an alarming rate causing a great source of concern for generations
to come in the future.
 Effective watershed management is the need of the hour. Lack of proper planning though could ruin everything
therefore effective understanding and proper panning of problem is required.
 With sophisticated technologies like remote sensing and Geographical Information Studies(G.I.S) at our disposal
problem can be understood accurately.
 Remote sensing use satellite images and GIS is instrumental in spatial data (point line areas)understanding
better. Thus the use of this sophisticated technology could point out the different geographical terrains leading
to proper understanding of the geology.
 This in turn will lead to proper analysis of problem and necessary steps required to tackle it.
 Not only we have this advantages but also various natural disasters, weather predictions, soil erosion, drainage
system other important problems faced by people can be properly understood
 Thus our aim is to signify remote sensing and GIS in watershed management which will prove a blessing for
future generations to effectively tackle all the land and water problems faced by them.

INTRODUCTION
WATERSHED MANAGEMENT
o Watershed is simply the geographic land area
that drains water into a stream, river, lake
wetland or coastal areas.
o Since only 1% percent of water on earth planet
is fit for human consumption it is a scarce
resource thus the need for water shed arises.
o A watershed management is the process of
creating and implement programs and projects
to sustain watershed.
o These plans or projects in turn sustain and
enhance watershed functions which affect
plants, animals and human communities near
the watershed boundaries.
o Watershed management involves itself with all
those activities required for protecting water
quality and quantity in the watershed.

WATERSHED MANAGEMENT IN RAJASTHAN
 Rajasthan is one of the regions in India where
there is scarcity of water therefore watershed
management is practiced in Rajathan.
 Watershed management practices include
various methods to collect water and then
use it for human utilization.
 The methods used in watershed management
ranges from rain water harvesting to
construction of water tank.
 Large number of arid regions exist in
Rajasthan where watershed management is
necessary to conserve water in rainfall and
make use of available water properly.
 Local people take active participation in
construction of tanks, dam and other tasks
related to watershed activities

NEED FOR WATERSHED
MANAGEMENT
•Effective utilization of natural resources to sustain future generation is important necessity.
•With increasing rate land and water which are key resources of man survival are depleting at
alarming speed.
•An action plan to minimize natural resource degradation is topmost priority nowadays.
•All economic activities ranging from agriculture to industry are totally dependent on land and water.
•With ever increasing human population there is severe stress on scarce water resources thus arising

the need of watershed management planning.

OBJECTIVES,PRINCIPLES &
BENEFITS OF WATERSHED
MANAGEMENT
OBJECTIVES OF WATERSHED MANAGEMENT
 Protect, improve or manage the watershed for
benefit of water resources development.
 Manage the watershed in order to minimize
natural disasters such as floods, drought etc.
 Protect, conserve and improve the land for
efficient and sustained production.
 Increase the ground water recharge through
in-situ conservation measures and water
harvesting structures.
 Utilize the natural resources effectively and
economically for improving agriculture and
industries dependent on it.
 Rehabilitate the watershed through proper
land use in order to minimize erosion and
increase productivity of land.
Activities related to
watershed management
PRINCIPLES OF WATESHED MANAGEMENT
 Utilizing and optimizing the land according to
its capability.
 Conservation of maximum possible rain water
at places where it falls.
 Putting adequate vegetable cover on the soil
for controlling soil erosion mainly during rainy
season.
 Draining out excess water with the safe
velocity and restoring in ponds for future use.
 Maximizing productivity per unit area, per unit
time and per unit of water.
BENEFITS OF WATERSHED MANAGEMENT
• More water.
• Improved water quality and hygiene.
• More cultivated land.
• Better water management.
• Soil conservation.
• Less disease.
• Improved live hoods and better quality of life.
REMOTE SENSING AND GIS
IN WATERSHED
MANAGEMENT
NEED FOR REMOTE SENSING AND GIS
 Watershed profile divides the terrain into unequal segments with
different terrain characteristics.
 Watershed management is used to conserve our water resource
therefore development of watersheds need better understanding
about the various natural resources and their relation with each
other and the live hood of stakeholders.
 Failure of watershed development in many cases due to lack of
proper planning and understanding can create adverse effects.
 In such case the use of remote sensing and GIS came into force.
USE OF REMOTE SENSING AND GIS IN WATERSHED
MANAGEMENT

 Remote sensing find its use in faster assessment REMOTE SENSING AND GIS IMAGE
of natural resources such as soil, geology, OF OAKVILLE
drainage etc.
 Aerial photographs and satellite images convey
important information on land use, vegetation,
slope ingredient erosion etc.
 It also find its use in assessment of economic
activities through land use and infrastructure of
land use.
 GIS is an important tool for tracking spatial data.
GIS give clear perspective for analysis at various
level to different partners of watershed.
 It allows us to develop, analyze, and display
explicit information and allows us the ability to
deal with problems like soil erosion and
drainage.
REMOTE SENSING
 It is an application photogrammetry in
which imagery is acquired with sensor.
 A sensor records the scene with help of
electronic scanner, thermal infrared,
camera microwave or multispectral
techniques.
 Special techniques are applied to
process and interpret the imagery for
purpose of producing conventional
maps , resource surveys etc.
 These maps then find their use to
interpret various geographic terrains,
watersheds etc.

ELEMENTS OF REMOTE SENSING

ANALYSIS TECHNIQUE OF REMOTE SENSING
 Image acquired from remote sensing may not provide all the information many other
spatial attributes of different sources are added to remote sensing.
 The integration of spatial data and their combined analysis is done through a set of
computer software or hardware, known as Geographical Digital image.
 This comprises of basic four steps
a) Image correction or restoration
b) Image enhancement
c) Image transformation
d) Image classification
GIS IN WATERSHED MANAGEMENT
 It can be defined as organized
collection of hardware, software
geographic data and personnel to
interpret the data.
 Data is captured, stored, updated,
manipulated, analyzed and displayed in
all forms of geographically referenced
information.
 GIS stands for Geographic Information
studies.
 GIS handles spatial data, it maintains all
details of spatial data and describes
what it is.

to study various vulnerable ecosystems to regulate developmental activities
and ecosystem development.
 Disease monitoring and mitigation is done by remote sensing as our country
greatly suffers from diseases leading to loss of human life and widespread
financial loses.
 Weather and climate studies are undertaken to predict weather, ocean state
forecasting and cyclone intensity etc through satellites.
FUTURE OF REMOTE SENSING AND GIS
 Reliable information on land and water for their effective utilization to meet
the rising demands of growing population is topmost priority.
 GIS and remote sensing have emerged as great tools to assimilate
information and then interpret it.
 GIS has evolved as sophisticated data management system to collect and
store voluminous information required for hydrological studies.
 GIS and remote sensing offers wide range of technological methods to study
land mapping, reservoir sedimentation, soil erosion studies, rainfall runoff
modeling in various parts of India etc.
 All in all GIS and remote sensing will play a vital role in watershed
management in the days to come.
CONCLUSION
 Watershed management can play a greater role in effective utilization of not
only our water bodies but also land conservation.
 With the use of Remote sensing and GIS data can be collected, analyzed and
interpreted for optimum and effective utilization of natural resource.
 Remote sensing and GIS will play a greater part in the time to come. They will
play a vital role in decision support system for various activities related to
management of land and water in sustainable environment.
 Still a lot is left to be done. There is need to evolve well coordinated
programme to develop standard methodologies and software as well as

WATER IS A NECESSITY OF LIFE
You care for the land and water it;
you enrich it abundantly.
The streams of God are filled with
water
to provide the people with grain,
for so you have ordained it.

You drench its furrows

and level its ridges;
you soften it with showers
and bless its crops.
