Learning objectives
At the end of this topic, you will be able to:
 Define the material concepts and mapping concepts.
 Understand material editor, material browser and material
library property (icons and buttons)
 List down types of standard materials and types of complex
material.
 State 3 types of color controls in standard material and it’s
function.
 List down types of maps application and it’s function.
 State 5 common types of mapping projection methods and
it’s function.
Material concepts
 When we first create an object, there are no materials assigned to
it.

 Basically it has a blank surface material taking on a single color

type.

 Material is a property that can be assigned to a single surface of

an object or the entire object.

 It controls how the surface is rendered and affects light behaviour,

color reflection, and finally the application of bitmap images on the
surfaces.
Mapping concepts
 Mapping allows greater detail and realism to an object without
having to increase the complexity of the object.

 Maps can be a bitmap images that are applied to the surface of the
object or simply created using another types of materials.

 Maps affect the surface based on how it is applied and it’s

intensity.

 More then one method of map application can be assigned on a

single material.
Material editor
 Material editor is used to choose and apply types of material and
mapping on an object’s surface.

 To go to material editor click on main toolbar menu or Ctrl +

M on keyboard.

 Then, material editor slots will emerge and to create materials

select a material slot .

Vertical Tools
 Sample type : To change the shape of the object in the
preview slots. (Sphere, cube, or cylinder)

 Background : Displays a colored background and is useful

when testing semi-transparent.

 Backlight : When active, renders sample objects as if some

background light were shining upon them.
Material Editor (Tools

 Select by material : To select objects that have materials on it.

Horizontals Tools
 Get material : Open material browser

 Put to library : Save material into current material library.

 Assign material : To assign material into an object/ model.

 Make material copy (duplicate) and Reset material (to clear)

 Go to parent : Goes to parent when maps are used.

Material browser
 It is used to select materials or maps from a library, save
material to the library and open different libraries.

 The right area is used to displays either names of the

materials and maps or sample view of the material.

 The top buttons let us to choose the type of material list to

display and delete material for current library.

Material library
 Store default material available in 3ds Studio Max software
and material which being save by user.

 The materials inside material library can be deleted, or

added by user.

 It also can be exported into the new project or imported from

previous project.
Types of material
Standard Materials

 It is the default material in the material editor sample slots.

 The material that we have created can be named by typing the

name inside the box besides standard button in material editor.

 There are 8 types of standard materials that is; Phong, Metallic,

Anisotropic, Blinn, Multi-Layer, Oren-Nayar-Blinn, Strauss, and
Transculent Shader.
Types of material (Standard
Material)
Standard Materials

 Standard materials types can be changed from shader basic

parameters in material editor.

** Read the explanation of the types of standard material in attachment given

Types of material
Another types of materials

 Besides standard materials, there are another types of material

which is used for the creation of more complex material.

 It was stored in material library and can be view from material

browser.

 It also can be achieved by clicking standard button in material

editor

 The figure show another

types of material available
in 3ds Studio Max.

** Read the explanation of the types of

material in the attachment given
Types of color controls in standard
materials
There are three types of color control in
standard material that is Ambient, diffuse
and secular.

It can be view in material editor below the

shader basic parameters.

The name of it’s parameter refers to types

of standard material used by user.

** Read the explanation of the color controls in the

attachment given
Types of maps application
 There are about 12 different types of mapping application
which can be applied on the objects.

 Higher value causes the map to have more effect on the

object.

 Maps applications can be selected from maps parameter in

material editor.

 More than one types of map application can be applied on a

single material.
Types of maps application
Types of maps application:
1- Diffuse
2- Specular
3- Shininess
4- Shininess strength
5- Self illumination
6- Opacity
7- Filter color
8- Bump
9- Reflection ** Read the explanation of the types of
maps application in the attachment given
10- Refraction
Types of mapping projection
methods
There are 5 common types of mapping projection methods, that is:

 Planar (Projects the map from a single plane similar to projecting

slide)
 Cylindrical (Projects the map from a cylinder that wraps around the
object)
 Spherical (Surrounds the object with the map)
 Shrink-Wrap (Uses spherical mapping but truncates the corners of
the map and joins them all at a single pole)
 Box (Projects the map from six sides, where each side has an
identical image of the map)
