ABOUT THE COMPANY

• Western Coalfields Limited (WCL) is one of the eight


Subsidiary Companies of Coal India Limited (CIL)
• It was formed in the year 1975.
• The company is under the administrative control of its parent
company Coal India & Ministry of Coal.
• The Company has contributed about 9.5% of the national coal
production during 2007-08.
• It has mining operation spread over the states of Maharashtra and
Madhya Pradesh.
• Electricity Boards are major consumers of its coal along with
cement, steel, chemical, fertilizer, paper and brick Industries in
these states.
Mission of the Coal India

"The Mission of Coal India Limited is to produce and market, the planned
quantity of Coal and Coal products Efficiently and Economically, with due
regard to Safety, Conservation and Quality.“
ORGANISATION CHART
DEPARTMENTS:

The company is divided into four major


departments i.e.
• Personnel Department,
• Technical Department,
• Production & Planning Department,
• Finance Department.
PERSONNEL DEPARTMENT
FUNCTIONS PERFORMED:
• Analyzing the demand & requirement of a particular type of job or field.

• Appointing appropriate workers or staffs to a particular part of job.

• Functioning as a mediator between the company and the workers of the


company.
• Ensuring smooth working of the workforce provided to the company.

• Solving any kind of disputes within the company.

• Ensuring safety for the workers.


• Analyzing the need and requirement of any kind of training programs for the
staff and workers.
• Making future plans and policies for the betterment of the company.
PROJECT & PLANNING DEPARTMENT
FUNCTIONS PERFORMED:

• Finding new areas for the production of coal.

• Maintaining the equipments of the company, by using proper storage methods.

• Providing better and improved technology for production with less amount of
investment.

• Providing Electrical & Mechanical support to the company.

• Checking safety for the Mines of the company.

• Planning the production pattern of the coal.

• Clearing the lands required for the purpose of mining of coal.

• Checking the effect of mining over the environment around it.


FINANCE DEPARTMENT
FUNCTIONS PERFORMED:
• Checking & controlling all the financial maters related to the
company.
• Making budget after properly analyzing the company’s future plans
and projects.
• Creating appropriate pay scale for each grade of employees working
in the company.
• Estimation of annual profit or loss of each area of the company.

• Preparing Internal Audit for the company.

• Suggesting other departments about the work to be done within a


given or sanctioned amount of money.

• Minimizing the expenses of the company.


• Distributing salaries & bonus to the employees of the company.
PRODUCTION DEPARTMENT
FUNCTIONS PERFORMED:
• Mining of coal from its reserves using various methods and technologies.

• Analyzing the type or grade of coal in each step of mining.

• Collecting data of the work done in each phase of mining. This data are then analyzed
and studied for future use.

• Using the provided workforce in a systematic manner, such that there efficiency can be
utilized in a better manner.

• Transporting coal in a systematic manner to the place of demand.

• Providing various safety measures for the workers and executives working in the
production area.
• Maintaining the various machineries that is used for the production of coal.

• Checking and analyzing the quality of coal that is produced

OBSERVATIONS
On the basis of the studies made in the company
following observations can be made:-

POSITIVE SIDE:
 The company is financially strong and has good reserves of
funds.
 Use of hi-tech machineries & technologies.
 Avoiding of using much more advanced technologies so that
more amount of jobs can be created.
 Though the company is a PSU unit but, the management is much
effective. This can be seen by the increasing profit of the
company at every financial period.
 The company doesn’t need to fear about any competitor in the
market.
NEGATIVE SIDE:

 Company is lacking in utilizing the complete


efficiency of the workforce provided to it.
 Regular conflicts between the management and the
unions of the workers.
 Lack in the training provided to the workers.
 Interference of high level officials in the regular
work.
 Availability of corruption in the company.
SUGGESTIONS

On the basis of the study done, following suggestions can be given to


the company:

• Make better use of the capital provided to the company.


• Better training to workers can lead the company to earn more profit.
• More importance to the environment or the surroundings of the
company should be given.
• The effectiveness of the workforce should be used in a more proper
manner.

• Improve the quality of work that is done in the company.


CONCLUSION
On the basis of the studies done in the company, following conclusion can be made:-
• The company is trying to provide more job opportunities by lowering down its profit
margin. In a country like India this type of company attitude is required to lower
down unemployment rate.

• Though the company is a Public Sector Unit but, the efficiency to do work can be
found much more than any other company.
• The company has a good final strength for the present as well as for the future need.

• Government can think over privatising this company for better performance and
result.

• The company can show a much more levels of profit in the balance sheet, if the level
of corruption in the company can be controlled.
