Background leading up to carbon nanotubes

• Until the mid-1980’s pure solid carbon was thought

to exist in only two physical forms, diamond and
graphite.

Fullerenes:
• Fullerenes are a form of carbon molecule that is
neither graphite nor diamond. They consist of a
spherical, ellipsoid, or cylindrical arrangement of
dozens of carbon atoms.

• A spherical fullerene looks like a soccer ball, and are

often called “buckyballs," whereas cylindrical
fullerenes are known as "buckytubes" or
"nanotubes”.

• Nano Radio:
1. Reception
Antenna of nanodimensions detects a radio wave by
vibrating at the same frequency as the rapidly oscillating
signal.

• Nano Radio:
2. Tunning:
Strength of an electric field can be adjusted to let the nanotube be
tensioned like a guitar string so that it vibrates only at the proper
frequency.

IV.Electromagnetic applications
“con’t”
• Nano Radio:
3. Amplification:
A large flow of electrons from the nanotube tip amplifies the
signal in the presence of a small voltage from a battery.

• Nano Radio:
4. Demodulation
The vibrating nanotube alters the current in a way that
retains just the audio frequencies of the radio wave.
