Some of the fundamental issues that the members
of the UN work on are:
sustainable development, protection of the
environment and refugees, disaster relief and
mitigation, counterterrorism, disarmament and
non-proliferation.

Pay closer attention to some of these topics (fundamental issues).

On pages 229 and 230 (Cad do Aluno – Vol. 1 - Activity 4a) there are
five topics and five plans of actions. Let’s divide them to make it
easier to read.

How does the UN Organization do it? Chat Time!
The UN Organization ….
1. maintains international peace and security;
2. protects Human Rights;
3. delivers humanitarian Aid;
4. promotes sustainable development;
5. upholds international law.
( ) ... by courts, tribunals, multilateral treaties and by

the Security Council, which can approve peacekeeping
missions/ impose sanctions/ or authorize the use of force
when there is a threat to international peace and security,
if it deems this necessary. These powers are given to it by
the UN Charter, which is considered an international
treaty.
( 1 ) ...by working to prevent conflict/ helping

parties in conflict, make peace/ peacekeeping/ by
creating the conditions to allow peace to hold and
flourish.
( 3 ) ...by the international community to

coordinate humanitarian relief operations due to
natural and man-made disasters in areas beyond
the relief capacity of national authorities alone.
( 4 ) ...by promoting prosperity and economic

opportunity/ greater social well-being/ and protection of
the environment/ by offering the best path forward for
improving the lives of people everywhere.
( 2 ) ...by making the promotion and protection of

Human Rights a key purpose and guiding principle of
the Organization. In 1948, the Universal Declaration of
Human Rights brought human rights into the realm of
international law.
