Grade One Lesson 14 Tonic Triads

What is a chord?
A chord is several notes sounded together.

What is a triad?
A triad is a chord of three notes. Tri means three. Ad means stacked on top of each other.

Tonic Triad
A triad may be built on any note of the scale. A triad built on the first note of a scale is called a tonic triad.

Tonic Triad
Here is a triad built on the first note of C major scale.

Tonic Triad
The bottom note of the triad is called ROOT. The middle note of the triad is called 3RD. The top note of the triad is called 5TH.

Why is it called 3rd and 5th?

Tonic Triad
The bottom note of the triad is called ROOT. The middle note is a 3RD above the root note. The top note is a 5TH above the root note.

Tonic Triad
Notice if the root note is on a line, all other notes are on lines. If the root note is on a space, all other notes are on spaces.

F major and G major Tonic Triad


When writing F major and G major tonic triads, don t forget to add the key signature.
