What is dengue?
Dengue is a viral disease transmitted by a mosquito called Aedes eagypti & Aedes albopictus it is common during rainy season.

What is the role of Aedes Mosquito in Humans? A mosquito that carry the dengue virus It bites humans and transmits dengue Increases in number during rainy season.

Who are prone to Aedes bite?


anybody can be bitten by the Aedes mosquito young or old, male or female, healthy or unhealthy. however, infants & school children are mostly affected with dengue; generally 09 year old age group & School children.

What are the characteristics of a Dengue mosquito?


small, black & white insects w/ stripes on its legs, body & back , thus called the Tiger mosquito; measures about 5mm in size feeding female takes blood meal male feeds on plant juices & nectars generally day biters bites all day long but prefers to bite 1-2 hours after sunrise & before sunset.

What are the characteristics of a Dengue mosquito? Life Cycle


can fly from 50 300m to look for blood meal or breeding site 1 female lays about 60 100 eggs per batch & lays about 3 4 batches of eggs in its lifetime prefers dark color for oviposition; breeds in artificial or natural containers; lays only in clean stagnant water Ae. aegypti prefers to rest cool shaded places, dark corners, closets & drawers; Ae. albopictus rests outdoor, among shrubs & trees. female Aedes mosquito feeds every 2 3 days & it can survive up 30 days.

How can Dengue be prevented?


eliminate mosquito breeding sites (source reduction) cover all water containers to avoid entry of mosquitoes change water of flower vases & scrub side of containers 1x a week dispose of garbage properly & remove rubbish around premises that can collect rain water inspect & clean roof gutters stockpiling of discarded tires under the shade & place a cover on top.

How can Dengue be prevented?


prevent mosquito bites install screens on windows & doors use protective clothing or repellents use mosquito nets for infants or adults while sleeping at daytime isolate the person sick w/ Dengue in a screened room or by using a mosquito net.

What must the community leaders do to prevent Dengue?


Organize a functional Dengue Team in the barangays ex. Dengue Task Force, Dengue Brigade, Dengue Watch Team in all barangays Implement anti-dengue activities ex. 4 Oclock Habit, Operation Linis Kontra Kiti-kiti, Healthy Places Conduct health education campaigns Conduct inspection of the premises to eliminate mosquito breeding sites Create & enforce ordinances to establish & maintain a dengue-free community.

Basic Information : Key Messages


Dengue is a dangerous disease; it can affect anyone but it is preventable. There is no drug or vaccine for Dengue. Once infected, the key to survival is early diagnosis & prompt management of cases. Dengue suspects should be brought to the nearest health facility. Do not self-medicate. Dengue mosquitoes breed in the artificial & natural containers found in our surroundings. Elimination of the breeding site is the cornerstone for mosquito control. Personal protection is also necessary to prevent mosquito bites. The occurrence of Dengue can be prevented through collaborative efforts of various sectors of society including the community.
