PLOT PLAN AND EQUIPMENT LAYOUT

TOPIC

PLOT PLAN AND EUIPMENT LAYOUT BY RAKESH SHARMA

PLOT PLAN
IT IS THE KEY DOCUMENT FOR DETAIL DESIGN ENGINEERING WHICH SHOWS SCHEMATICALLY THE EQUIPMENT LAYOUT,SUPPORTING FACILITIES ,POSITION OF ROADS AND BUILDINGS

EQUIPMENT LAYOUT
IT IS THE SCHEMATIC REPRESENTATION OF ALL EQUIPMENT PRESENT AND TO BE INSTALLED IN FUTURE IT INCLUDES EQUIPMENT TO EQUIPMENT DISTANCE,DISTANCE FROM RACK OR STRUCTURE ,EQUIPMENT ELEVATION ,TAG NO.

PURPOSE OF PLOT PLAN AND EQUIPMENT LAYOUT

It is essential for obtaining statutory approval and meet insurer requirement . It defines the outer limits of the available property selected for plant development It is a pictorial reference for the work of Engineering, Scheduling, Construction, Operation, cost control, Estimating and material control. It is a measuring tool for owners for evaluating the level of completeness of agreed upon work ,also for progress payments.

PRINCIPAL CONSIDERATIONS FOR PLOT PLAN

STATUTORY REQUIREMENT

Minimum distance between the equipments, utility building, roads etc. should be as per GE GAP 2.5.2 or OISD-118 which ever is applicable as per ITB requirements. General Classification (per OISD) of Petroleum Products based on Flash Point like , Class- A, B , C, Excluded Petroleum used for grouping Storage tanks Class A- flash point below 23deg Celsius Class B-flash point between 23deg cel. to 65deg Celsius. Class C-flash point between 65deg cel. to 93deg Celsius. Excluded petroleum-flash point of 93 deg Celsius and above.

INFORMATION REQUIRED
Process unit basic requirement : Grade mounted horizontal inline arrangement Structure mounted vertical arrangement Equipment list and estimated capacity of individual equipment As per Process and Operational requirements if certain equipment require continuous attention or share common facilities should be located in the same area with specific maintenance requirement, EOT, davit, conveyor etc.

GRADE MOUNTED PLOT PLAN SAMPLE

VERTICAL MOUNTED PLOT PLAN SAMPLE

INFORMATION REQUIRED

Process flow diagram which indicates process parameters and interconnectivity of equipment Process requirement like pressure drop, line pocketing, slope requirement, straight run requirement etc. to be specifically understood for locating the equipment . As per Process/Operational requirement locating the equipment for multi- process units within same Plot area. Arrangement of pipe racks for supporting piping, instrument and electrical cables, fin fan coolers or any other equipment

INFORMATION REQUIRED

Wind direction and Reference coordinate system Elevation of lower tier of pipe rack is governed by maintenance and piping clearance based on size Consideration for expansion space at grade or in elevated structure based on Process requirement Main and auxiliary roads to the requirements of Operation and Maintenance Understanding of equipment servicing during operation or planned shutdown

RACK SECTION AND AUXILLARY ROADS IN PLOT PLAN

INFORMATION REQUIRED

Sequential interconnection of the unit to suit safety, piping flexibility, accessibility along with Piping economic consideration alloy steel or heavy wall piping Chemical and catalyst storage area Storage areas for solid products such as petroleum coke, sulphur, petroleum wax etc. Crane movement and load transfer area consideration for erection of equipments Underground facilities could affect positioning of equipment and plot requirement

INFORMATION REQUIRED

Loss prevention and fire safety requirements Fire station location and access to process unit during emergency Structure requirements for specific equipments like reactor, compressor, turbines, boilers etc Climate conditions like severe cold, hot, rain or wind can influence location of critical equipment and plot area Depending on soil strata, foundations requirement on piled, spread or common foundation along with underground services like oily water sewer, storm water, fire water, cooling water, other chemical drainages etc. could affect plot and layout

FIRE PROTECTION AND GAS DETECTION LAYOUT

FLAME DETECTOR FIRE HYDRANT FIRE MONITOR

COMBUSTIBLE GAS DETECTOR

FIRE AND GAS ALARM LAMP

INFORMATION REQUIRED
Locating of buildings like Control room, PIB, Substation, Operator Cabin etc. are also equally important for sizing and planning of plot-plan Arrangement & spacing of equipment are governed by number of requirements like, process, supporting, piping flexibility, plat forming, safety, maintainability etc.

INFORMATION PROVIDED IN PLOT PLAN

North Direction (Plant/True) and Reference coordinate system Key plan, scale and reference drawings (P&ID, GAS,etc.) Equipment identification, location and Schedule Battery limit and Plot boundaries Equipment list with elevations and remarks if applicable Utility buildings (substation, control room, operator cabin, etc.) Access to and clearance around Equipment/buildings. Inter distances between equipments and other facilities as per the statutory requirements

INFORMATION PROVIDED IN PLOT PLAN

Lay down and dismantling areas Loading and unloading areas Escape routes and access for fire fighting Access from adjacent units (Existing/New) Sections correctly cross-referenced to plans Grid references for pipe rack and other structures Primary and secondary roads if applicable. Drainage and Grade Elevation. Future area.

ROLE OF DIFFERENT DISCIPLINES

PD& P : To generate equipment arrangement and major piping studies to facilitate spacing between equipment and under ground facilities, estimation of bulk material quantity Civil :To develop grading and u/g lines, curb areas, foundation and structural designs, estimation of bulk material quantity Electrical: To produce area classification drawings, to locate incoming cable switch gears, cable route finalization (Tray and Trench) and estimation of bulk material quantity

ROLE OF DIFFERENT DISCIPLINES

Instrumentation: To locate analyzer house , PIB, specific Instr.

Location, cable route finalization (Tray and Trench) , estimation of bulk material quantity,

Process System : To facilitate hydraulic design , line sizing, validate

Licensors requirement etc.

Planning: To schedule the activities for proper Engg. Completion. Construction: To plan erection sequence of all plant equipment,
including rigging plan, lay down area, constructability review etc.

ROLE OF DIFFERENT DISCIPLINES
