Outstanding features
-Each unit has a core of 5 pages (+ a 2-page Explore Section and a 1-page Look Again Section) -Number of units: Starter 10 units, Advanced 12 units, other levels 14 units -Thematic link within each lesson: order of activities can be changed -5th page = Target Activity SO not all in the previous 4 pages is compulsory (the Core can be extended or shortened according to
students needs, language focus, etc)

-Triggers within each unit: Keyword and Across Cultures (Explore

Speaking), Keyword and Independent Learning (Explore Writing), DVD ROM Extras in WB, 1st half of Target Activity.

-Self-assessment: Look Again

A unit at a glance + Striking a balance

-Freestanding sections: Explore S and Explore W (you can
pick and choose according to Sts level and needs/interests) -Core could be shortened / extended and Explore sections

could be an option -As units are goal-oriented, you can plan backwards and
decide how much weight you give to each section -Idea:

Keywords can be given to individual students to prepare before each class (student presents the can we give students the possibility to choose?

keyword and the teacher assigns the keywords before the lesson is given) -How

EXAMPLE 1 - UNIT 1 / STARTER A1

Step 1: Target Activity, Ex 1 / DVD ROM Extra (just see) Step 2: Page 6, Ex 2 / 3 Step 3: Page 7, Ex 1, 2, 3 -> necessary Classroom lg -> do HW / CW: WB

Step 1: Across Cultures Step 2: Pages 8,9. Sounds and spelling: optional Step 3: Page 10, Ex 2 Step 4: Keyword -> do if necessary
Note on Keyword: Anticipate! Have a list on the wall. Have a student prepare a keyword and explain it in class (assign keywords with a week s notice, for eg)

Step 1: Explore Speaking / DVD ROM Extra (complete) Step 2: Task

EXAMPLE 2: UNIT 11 / ELEM. A2

Depending on Ss blackground, you could: a) Start off on Page 1 OR b) Use WB p. 56 to activate background knowledge on travelling OR c) Across Cultures OR d) Reading p. 92: a traveller s tale

Striking a balance
You can strike a balance between the more technical aspect of the theme and the focus on telling stories connected with the theme:
you can leave travelling info, technical vocab in the background and focus more on oral discourse / telling stories.

Vocab focus: not all vocab sections have the same weight
(p. 90 receptive vocab, p. 93 productive vocab, p. 94 task vocab you can use the extra practice exercises in the WB, on page 55-6)

Explore Speaking: you can use it before Ss final production because they will be exposed to 2 different
stories .

DVD ROM Extra: can be used in the same way, before

final production.

My English Section (WB): go back to it and then ask

students to bring concrete tickets, objects, props they can use when they tell their stories.

Extra activities in the TB: they are very important in

this unit. I would use: And the moral is and Tell me more!

TASK
Choose a unit* from the level you are working with, and a) decide how many lessons you will devote to the unit b) change the order of activities and strike a balance between core and more specific sections, mats from Coursebook and other components, classwork and homework

* You may choose a unit you have already dealt with.
