BIOMETRIC AUTHENTICATION

By Tanmayee Das C/03/45 ECE

INTRODUCTION
Biometrics (ancient greek: bios=life ,

metron=measure) is the study of automated methods of uniquely recognizing humans based upon one or more intrinsic physical or behavioral traits. Biometric Authentication refers to technology that measures and analyses human physical and behavioral characteristics for authentication purposes. Examples of traits include fingerprints, eye

WHY BIOMETRICS
A variety of systems require reliable

personal recognition scheme to ensure that only a legitimate user, accesses the rendered services.e.g:computer systems,ATM. Individuals identity is confirmed based on who she is rather than what she possesses. User convenience.

OPERATION
A biometric system operates in the following steps: 1.Registration 2.Template creation 3.Authentication

PERFORMANCE
Measured in terms of 1.False accept rate(FAR) 2.False reject rate(FRR) 3. Equal error rate(EER)

BIOMETRIC TECHNOLOGY
Fingerprint recognition

Iris recognition
Retina recognition

Face recognition
Hand recognition

BIOMETRIC FINGERPRINT IDENTIFICATION

Modern fingerprint identification systems take a digital scan of a person's fingertips and records its unique physicial characteristics, such as whorls, arches, loops, ridges and furrows. Fingerprint data is either stored as an image or encoded as a character string.

IRIS RECOGNITION
The iris of the eye possess physical

patterns unique to each person no two irises are alike in the world. Iris-scan biometric systems can analyze over 200 points of the iris, including rings, furrows and freckles.

RETINA RECOGNITION
Retinal scanning systems look at

the pattern of blood vessels at the back of the eye .Retina scans use a light to shine on the retina and require that the person place their eye close to the scanner, remain still, and focus on a specified location.

FACE RECOGNITION
Biometric facial recognition

measures and analyzes the physical attributes of a person's face.Characteristics measured include the overall structure and shape of the face, and distances between the eyes, nose, mouth, and jaw edges.

HAND RECOGNITION
This measures and

analyzes the physical attributes of a person's hand. Characteristics measured include the overall size and shape of the hand, including the lengths of the fingers and joints, and characteristics of the skin such as creases and ridges.

BIOMETRIC PRODUCTS
Biometric time clock

Biometric door locks

Biometric keyboards and disks

Biometric ID cards

BIOMETRIC TIME CLOCK

Can be used to track

employee worktime and performance, reducing worktime fraud. can also be used for security and access control at your facility .

BIOMETRIC FINGERPRINT DOORLOCK

Biometric locks feature a fingerprint sensor that identifies and verifies the fingerprint of any persons stored in the unit for easy access.

BIOMETRIC ID CARDS
A fingerprint ID

card incorporates a fingerprint sensor, a small computer processing unit and non-volatile memory for storing fingerprint data and personal information - all in a package no larger than a credit card!.

CONCLUSION
Although Biometrics has some social issues raised against it like identity theft and lack of privacy, still it provides very good security solutions for the future.
