Earthworks Design
When preparing an earthworks design for a development there are a number of items which need to be considered to ensure the economy, safety and design life of the project.
Batter
slopes -Max generally 1v in 2h however subject to type of material and surcharge loads -Slope stability (benching, surcharge loads and erosion) -Long term factor of safety of 1.5
Earthworks Design
Batter
Retaining walls
-Types (Boulder, concrete sleeper, timber sleeper, masonry block) -Cost -Loads -Location
Earthworks Design
Site grading
-Minimum and maximum grades -Overland flow -Free draining -Long term stability -Slope sensitive development
Topsoil
-Stripping -Replacement
Earthworks Design
Cut to fill
(Cont.) -Balance, import or export -Unsuitable material -Cost -Type of material (poor material, good material, rock)
EARTHWORKS PLAN
government requirements -Department of Environment and Resource Management (DERM) -Local council
Controls measures
-Silt fence -Sediment ponds -Field and gully inlet protection -Turfing and seeding
Audits/Inspections
Roadworks Design
As the engineer we are required to ensure that the proposed development will adequately provide for safe access to the development and within the development.
Design Vehicle
-Type of vehicle the development needs to cater for (size, weight) -Frequency of vehicles
Roadworks Design
Road hierarchy
Roadworks Design
Grading (cont.)
-Horizontal alignment -Sight distance -Site access -Affects of proposed development on neighboring roads -Site maneuverability (vehicle turning) -Disability movements (AS1428)
Roadworks Design
Car
parking -AS2800 -Minimum lengths/widths -Aisle widths -Vehicle turnover -Disability parking
Vehicle crossings
Roadworks Design
Signage & Line marking
-Types (rigid or flexible) -Subgrade strength (CBR tests) -Pavement materials -Pavement thickness -Expansion joints -Austroads pavement design manual

Pavement Design (cont.)
-Cement and Concrete Association of Australia design guides -Local Council pavement design tables
Design Guides
-Local Council Guidelines -Queensland Streets -Austroads -Main Roads Design Guide -MUTCD

Sewer Design
Each lot in a development is required to have adequate services to cater with the waste generated from the use of the land.
Private or

Specifications
To ensure works are constructed to a suitable standard a specification will usually be noted or provided with the design.
Content of specification
-Minimum requirements -Quality of materials -Type of materials -Testing of materials -Construction techniques
SEWER SPECIFICATION
Testing
As works are being completed, testing is usually undertaken in accordance with government requirements or as nominated within a specification. As the engineer we are often required to review and verify the tests.
Earthworks
-AS 3798 Guidelines for earthworks on commercial and residential developments -Level 1 sampling and testing -Level 2 sampling and testing
Testing
Earthworks (cont.)
- Frequency of testing (Table 8.1 or local spec) -Density tests -Maximum dry density ratio -Optimum moisture content
Roadworks
-Grading of pavement material -CBR of subgrade -Density of subgrade and pavement material

TEST RESULTS
Approval Process
There are a number of approval processes which may be required in order to commence the construction of your engineering design.
Different processes depending on whether
works
Internal
works -Private certifier -Plumbing and drainage application (IDAS forms) -Form 15 & Form 16
Approval Process
External
works -Works to be transferred to Council -Application usually to Council -Operational works application (Change to Ground Level, Works for Infrastructure) -Sustainable Planning Act (SPA) -Integrated Development Assessment System (IDAS) -Referral agencies
APPLICATION FORMS
-Mark up site plan showing proposed finished levels in carpark and building ground floor. -Indicate where you believe retaining and earth batters may be required. -Building floor to be flat and surrounding footpath to have max 2% fall away from building.
-Check car parking against AS2800 for bay dimensions and aisle width based on user class 1. -Building requires 57 car parks including 2 disabled car parks. Indicate location for disabled car parks and associated shared area. Access to building adjacent to entrance. -Pavement design (client requires asphalt car park, assume subgrade CBR of 5%).
-Proposed sewer layout from Council connection to edge of building (show invert levels, pipe size and grade based on 1,100 fixture units).
Application Forms
-The development will require an Operational Works application to Council for earthworks, roadworks and stormwater drainage. Complete IDAS form 6 which would usually be included in your OPW application.
