Smooth muscles work by sending a signal in a wave over several cells

This wavelike action helps in moving food through the intestine.

Copyright 2010 Ryan P. Murphy

Activity! Move the golfball (food) through the intestine (long bag) with your fist in a wave motion.
-Have some table members hold rulers, -One or two members work together to wave the ball through entire intestine using only a fist.

-Some water and dish soap will make the process easier.
