Objectives

On completion of this period, you would

be able to Know :
 Input devices
 Output devices

CCP105.7 2
Recap
 Various units of a computer
 Input Unit - Useful to feed the data
 Output Unit - Gives the result
 Central Processing Unit

 Arthimetic & Logic Unit - Processes the data

 Control Unit - Controls various units
 Memory Unit - Stores the data

CCP105.7 3
What is an Input Device ?

 A device which is used to send data to the computer

is called an input device

Purpose of an Input Device

 To facilitate communication between user and computer

CCP105.7 4
Input Devices
 Punched hole devices are one of the oldest and
cheapest (I/O) devices

 Cards and paper tapes are the two most familiar

punched hole devices

 Data is recorded on these in the form of punched

holes using some standard code

CCP105.7 5
Electronic Keyboard

 A text based input device that is used to type in

letters, numbers and other characters.
 Consists of Character keys which help in pulling
data and instructions into Computer.
 Consists of non-character keys which help in
carrying out various other operations.
 Function keys which are called “Soft Keys” can be
assigned any tasks by programs.

CCP105.7 6
Electronic Keyboard

CCP105.7 7
Non-Character Keys

 Enter  Caps Lock

 Backspace  Esc(Escape key)
 Delete  Home/End
 Ctrl (Control key)  Page Up
 Alt (Alternate Key)  Page Down
 Shift  Function Keys
 Tab  Num lock
 Arrow Keys

CCP105.7 8
Mouse
 To move the cursor on Computer screen
 To give instructions to Computer

 To Run programs and applications

 It can be used to select menu commands

 Move icons
 Size Windows

 Start Programs

 Close Windows etc.

CCP105.7 9
Different Types of Mouse

CCP105.7 10
Mouse Actions
With mouse, the following actions can
be performed
 Click
 Right Click
 Double Click
 Drag & Drop

CCP105.7 11
Scanner
 Used to digitize pictures and images and store them in
your computer

CCP105.7 12
Scanner

CCP105.7 13
Touch screen

 It allows the user to operate a computer by simply

touching the display screen

 Example :- ATM at a bank

CCP105.7 14
Light Pen
 It uses a light sensor device to select objects on a
display screen

 It is similar to a mouse except that with a light pen

you can move the pointer and select any object on
the screen by directly pointing to the object with the
light pen

 It also helps in directly writing input on a screen

which will directly feed the input to the computer

CCP105.7 15
OUTPUT DEVICES

CCP105.7 16
Output Devices
 Monitor
 LCD
 Printer
 Speaker
 Plotter

CCP105.7 17
What is an Output Device ?

 A device used by the computer to display, pass on

its contents, results or other information to the users
in human readable form

CCP105.7 18
Monitor

CCP105.7 19
Monitor
 It is used to display information, programs and
applications in a computer

 It is also called display screen

 Like television, monitors come in different sizes and

types

CCP105.7 20
LCD

 It is smaller, and lighter as compared to a monitor

 It is mostly used with portable

computers(Laptops)

CCP105.7 21
Printer
 It is used to create a hard copy of the files stored in a
computer

 There are two basic qualities associated with

printers:

 Resolution
 Print speed

CCP105.7 22
Printer
 Print resolution is measured as the number of dots
per inch (dpi)

 Print speed is typically measured in pages per

minute (ppm)

CCP105.7 23
Types of Printer
 Dot Matrix Printers
 Impact Line Printers
 Ink Jet Printers
 Laser Printers

CCP105.7 24
Laser Printer (Color)

CCP105.7 25
Laser Printers

 These are superior

 They are very fast, easy to use and produce high

quality output

 They are page printers in the sense that they produce

a output page by page

CCP105.7 26
Plotter
 A plotter interprets commands from the computer to
make line drawings on a paper using multicolored
automated pens

 It can be very useful in drawing graphs, bar chats, line

drawing and maps on rolls of paper

CCP105.7 27
SUMMARY

 Input devices

 Output devices

CCP105.7 28
Summary
 Input Devices
 Keyboard
 Mouse
 Scanner etc
 Output Devices
 Monitor
 Printer
 Plotter etc.
