Topic : Median
Sub topic : Calculation of Median
Duration : 50 mts

CCP303.35 1
Objectives:

On completion of this period, you would be

able to :
 Calculate Median for Continuous series
(Inclusive classes)

CCP303.35 2
Recap
 Median is middle-most value of the variables
that are arranged in order
 Median for ungrouped data = Size of (n+1)/2th
observation provided the observations are
arranged in either ascending or descending
order

CCP303.35 3
Recap

 For discrete series M = Size of (N+1)/2th item

where M = Median, N = Total frequency

 For Continuous series (Exclusive series)

L2 - L1
Median=L1+----------x(m – c)
F1

CCP303.35 4
Calculation of Median
Continuous Series (Inclusive classes)

Steps:
 Convert data into Exclusive classes
 Taking average of upper limit with lower limit of next
class
 Decide Median class (where value of Median lies).
Use N/2 as the rank of Median

CCP303.35 5
Calculation of Median
Continuous Series (Inclusive classes)

Steps
 After ascertaining Median class, use formula to
calculate exact value of Median

CCP303.35 6
Median - Continuous Series - Formula
L2 - L1
Median=L1+ ----------x(m – c)
F1

Where
M = Median
L1 = Lower limit of the median class
L2 = Upper limit of the median class
f1 = frequency of the median class
m = N/2
C = Cumulative frequency of the class preceding
the median class

CCP303.35 7
Example – 1:

Calculate Median from the following

distribution:
Wages No. of persons
0-9 2
10-19 3
20-29 5
30-39 12
40-49 25
50-59 18
60-69 12
70-79 8
80-89 7
CCP303.35 8
Solution to Ex. 1
CALCULATION OF MEDIAN
Wages (x) No. of workers Cumulative
(f) frequency (c.f.)
-0.5-9.5 2 2
9.5-19.5 3 5
19.5-29.5 5 10
29.5-39.5 12 22
39.5-49.5 25 47
49.5-59.5 18 65
59.5-69.5 12 77
69.5-79.5 8 85
79.5-89.5 7 92
N = 92
CCP303.35 9
Solution contd

m = Size of N/2th item

Check where 46th item lies
in the table (cumulative
= Size of 92/2th item frequency column)

= Size of 46th item

CCP303.35 10
Solution contd

Median lies in the class 39.5 - 49.5

L2 – L1
M = L1 + ----------(m - c)
f1

49.5 – 39.5
= 39.5 + -------------(46 - 22)
25
= 39.5 +10 X24
25
= 49.1
Hence, Median wage = Rs. 49.1 or 49

CCP303.35 11
Example-2
Calculate Median for the following frequency
distribution:

Weight (in No. of Apples

gms.)
410-419 14
420-429 20
430-439 42
440-449 54
450-459 45
460-469 18
470-479 7

CCP303.35 12
Solution to Ex. 2
Convert the Inclusive class into Exclusive class
CALCULATION OF MEDIAN

Weight (in gms.) No. of Cumulative frequency

(x) apples (f) (c.f.)
409.5-419.5 14 14
419.5-429.5 20 34
429.5-439.5 42 76
439.5-449.5 54 130
449.5-459.5 45 175
459.5-469.5 18 193
469.5-479.5 7 200
N = 200
CCP303.35 13
Solution contd
Check where 100th item
m = Size of N/2 item
th
lies in the solution table
= Size of 200/2th item
= Size of 100th item
Median lies in the class 439.5 - 449.5

L2 - L 1
Median = L1 + ----------(m-c)
f

L1=439.5, L2=449.5, m=100, c=76, f1=54

499.5 - 439.5
Median = 439.5 + ---------------- (100-76)
54

CCP303.35 14
Solution contd

Median = 439.5 + (10 x 24)/54

= 439.5 + 4.44
= 443.9
Median weight = 443.94 gms

CCP303.35 15
