EC-302. 12 1
OBJECTIVES

Upon the completion of this topic, the student

must be able to:

• Explain the need of RPS

• Give the specifications of RPS

EC-302. 12 2
Unregulated power supply

• This system is not good enough for some applications

because of its

1. Poor regulation

2. DC output voltage varies directly with AC input.

3. DC output voltage varies with temperature.

EC-302. 12 3
REGULATED POWER SUPPLY

• An electronic circuit regulator, used in conjunction with

unregulated power supply is called a regulated power

supply.

• The above circuit is used to overcome the shortcomings

and to reduce the ripple voltage.

EC-302. 12 4
Block diagram of RPS

• A regulated power supply consists of an unregulated

power supply and a voltage regulator

Introduction to RPS

Electronic circuits using transistors require a source of

dc power.

• It is obtained using dc power supply.

• DC voltage must remain constant with changes in ac

mains or load.

• So voltage regulating devices are used with ordinary

power supply. This forms regulated DC power supply.

EC-302. 12 6
Voltage Regulation

• Variation of output voltage wrt load current drawn

from power supply is called voltage regulation.

• % Voltage regulation=(Vnl-Vfl)/Vflx100

• Where Vnl=dc output voltage at no load and

• Vfl =dc output voltage at full load .

EC-302. 12 7
Need of RPS

In an ordinary power supply voltage regulation is poor.

• DC output voltage changes with load current.

• Output voltage changes due to variations in input ac

voltage.

• Variations in dc voltage cause erratic operation of

electronic circuits.

EC-302. 12 8
Specifications of RPS

• Input: 230v,50Hz,1A ,AC

• Output:- Voltage: Regulated dc voltage between 0 to

50V
Current: Current between 0 to 1A

• Load regulation: 0.01% or better

• Ripple: Less than 0.1% or better

• Protection: Protection against short circuit for indefinite

period

constant so long as mains voltage is

(a) Increased

(c) decreased

(e) unaltered

(g) none of the above

EC-302. 12 10
2. In an ordinary power supply voltage regulation is

(a) High

(b) Low

(c) Poor

(d) none

Questions frequently asked in examination

• What are the demerits of an unregulated power supply?

• What is the need for RPS?

• What are the specifications of RPS?

EC-302. 12 12
Summary

• In order to overcome the demerits of unregulated

power supply an RPS is used.

• The specifications of a RPS are listed.
