CALCIUM HYDROXIE
Calcium hydroxide is a relatively weak cement. Due to their alkaline nature they serve as a protective barrier against irritants from certain restorations.
1. 2. 3. 4.
AVAILABLE AS: Two paste system (base & catalyst) Light cured system Single paste in syringe form Powdered form (mixed with distilled water)
COMMERCIAL NAMES: 1. Self cured Dycal, Urbicol, Calcidor 2. Light cured Prisma VLC dycal.
Paste 2
Components Calcium hydroxide (50%) Zinc oxide (10%) Zinc stearate (0.5%) Ethyl toulene Sulphonamide (39.5%) Glycol salicylate (40%)
Titanium dioxide Calcium sulphate Calcium tungstate
Function Primary reactive ingredients Accelerator Oil compound, acts as carrier Primary reactive ingredient Inert fillers, Pigments & radiopacifiers
LIGHT ACTIVATED: Light activated calcium hydroxide cement contains Ca (OH)2 and BaSO4 in urethane dimethacrylate resin, HEMA and polymerization activators.
ADVANTAGE: 1. Longer working time 2. Less brittle than two paste system
SETTING REACTION
Ca (OH)2 reacts with the salicylate ester to form a chelate , i.e. amorphous calcium disalicylate. Zinc also takes part in the reaction. SETTING TIME: 2.5 5.5 minutes
PROPERTIES
1. 2. 3. MECHANICAL PROPERTIES: Compressive strength: poor, 10 27 MPa. Tensile strength: poor, 1 MPa. Modulus of elasticity: 0.3 GPa/m2 .
THERMAL PROPERTIES: 1. They provide some thermal insulation if used in sufficiently thick layer. 2. However, thickness greater than 0.5mm is not recommended.
SOLUBILITY & DISINTEGERATION: 1. Solubility in water is high (0.4 to7.8%). 2. Solubility is higher when exposed to phosphoric acid & ether. 3. Care should be taken during acid etching and during application of varnish. BIOLOGICAL PROPERTIES: 1. Effect on pulp: alkaline in nature, pH ranges 9.2 11.7. 2. Formation of secondary dentine: The process is a product of irritation of the pulp tissue. Possibly mediated by the activation of TGFb, a cellular growth factor.
