Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd (HPCL) was incorporated as Standard Vacuum Refining Company of India Ltd in 1952. later It became the ESSO Standard Refining Company of India Ltd in 1962. HPCL was formed with the merger of ESSO and Lube India Undertaking in 1974.

Cortex Oil Refining India Ltd and Kosan Gas Company were merged with the company in 1976 and 1979 . Today the second largest integrated oil refining and marketing company in India HPCL was born on 15th july,1974 with the merger of ESSO, Lube India Ltd., Cortex Oil Refining India Ltd. and Kosan Gas Company Ltd .

HPCL accounts for about 20% of the market share and about 10% of the nation's refining capacity with two coastal refineries, one at Mumbai (West Coast) having a capacity of 5.5 Million Metric Tonnes Per Annum (MMTPA) and the other in Vishakapatnam (East Coast) with a capacity of 7.5 MMTPA. HPCL also holds an equity stake of 16.95% in Mangalore Refinery & Petrochemicals Limited (MRPL), a state-of-the-art refinery at Mangalore with a capacity of 9 MMTPA.

HPCL, a fortune 500 company, is one of the major integrated oil refining and marketing companies in India. It is a Mega Public Sector Undertaking (PSU) with Navaratna status. HPCL operates two refineries, one in Mumbai, Maharashtra and other in Visakhapatnam, AP.

HPCL introduced premium gasoline under the brand 'Power' in 2002. During the same period, the company launched HPCL-ICICI cobranded credit card. y The company began construction of a new LPG bottling plant at Loni, Uttar Pradesh in February 2005. y In the same year, the company completed the upgradation of its refineries in Mumbai and Visakhapatnam at a cost of INR2800 million. y HPCL is also building a new pipeline between Mundra and Delhi and extending the Mumbai-Pune pipeline to Solapur.

HPCL owns the country's largest Lube Refinery with a capacity of 335,000 Metric Tonnes which amounts to 40% of the national capacity of Lube Oil production. Presently HPCL produces over 300+ grades of Lube. It is Indias flagship Downstream company - Along with subsidiaries accounts for 47% of Petroleum market share among Public Sector Oil Companies, 41% of National refining capacity and 51% downstream pipeline capacity.

Marketing Segment
The marketing segment includes a retail network of 6,667 gas stations across the country through which the company markets diesel, gasoline and lubricants. y The company markets kerosene and light diesel oil through a separate channel comprising 1648 dealers. y Other businesses of the company include liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and lubricants. y The company relies on in-house production and imports for its LPG requirements.

The company has 40 LPG bottling plants. HPCL markets LPG through a network of 2,153 distributors. The company currently has 21.7 million LPG customers. HPCLs lubricant business includes a lubricant refinery and several blending plants. The company markets its lubricants through its own gas stations and 15,000 retail outlets. The company has planned upgradation, automation and new facilities for the Marketing Division to strengthen its marketing infrastructure at an expenditure of Rs.1400 Crores.
