What Is A CRDI?
The letters CRDI stands for Common Rail Direct Fuel Injection. It is a fuel injector working on common rail design, thats injects fuel in Petrol as well as in Diesel engines.

It was developed in the late 1960s by Robert Huber. In Swiss Federal Institute Of Technology Switzerland. Its first successful vehicle began in Japan by the mid1990s by a Japanese automotive parts manufacturer. The concept of direct-injection is older concept now the common-rail design is quite a step forward. In1997 it comes in use for first passenger car Alfa Romeo and later on that same year Mercedes-Benz C 220 CDI.

History of CRDI

Common Tube Or Rail Fuel in the common tube or rail is under a set
amount of pressure. Which causes the fuel to be atomized or broken down to its smallest particles. This allows the fuel to combine with the air much more efficiently. With proper direct injection, fuel use is highly efficient, with much less waste fuel escaping the system unused.

HOW DOES C.R.D.I WORKS?

The CRDI engine is designed with a common rail for supplying equal amount of fuel to all cylinders at a desired pressure using a pressure regulator attached to it. The pressure regulator, controls the pressure of the air supplied into the cylinders thorough the inlet valve. These valves are Solenoid or Piezoelectric valves that electronically control the fuel injection time and quantity and the higher pressure that provides better fuel atomization.

ECU(electronic control unit), it is a electronic device that allow to inject a small amount of diesel just before the main injection event (Pilot Injection) by using sensors. This reduces the explosiveness and vibration. Common rail engines require very short (< 1 s) or no heating up time at all and produce lower engine noise and emissions than older systems.

FEATURES OF CRDI
On diesel engines, it gives a high-pressure (over 1,000 bar/15,000 psi) fuel rail feeding individual solenoid valves, as opposed to low-pressure fuel pump feeding unit injectors. Third-generation common rail diesels now feature piezoelectric injectors for increased precision, with fuel pressures up to 1,800 bar/26,000 psi. In gasoline engines, it is used in gasoline direct injection engine technology.

For diesel vehicles CRDI helps to improve the performance by as much as 25 percent. for passenger vehicles.

ADVANTAGES

It provides more power and makes the technology more attractive

Engines with CRDI run much more smoothly, with efficiency rail. CRDI method greatly reduces engine and vehicle vibration. Gives better fuel economy. Reduces the cost of operation significantly.

greatly enhanced by higher pressure possible in the common-

DISADVANTAGES
CRDI engine is a little more expensive than older technologies. vBut the savings in fuel cost can help recoup the initial expensive over time.
