To identify the prerequisites of a valid marriage.

Established Goals
Marriage is a unique sacrament, in that it is built into the very nature our human reality as created male and female in the image of God and called to a covenant of loving others with Gods love. The two creation accounts present the two basic ends of marriage; procreative, propagating the human race and unitive, the two will become one body.

Remember an adage: To have three wives is polygamy.

To have two wives is

bigamy. To have only one wife is a Monotony. A new mentality emerges: monogamy is passe. What about 10 wives? Gluttony!

Marriage is like a zipper.
There are two rows of teeth on a zipper. These teeth fit into one another very neatly. But you can never fasten the zipper unless you use the little zip that draws the teeth together and locks them.

Questions
1. How is marriage compared to a zipper? Explain.
2. In Christian marriage, who do you think acts as two rows of teeth? Who acts as the little zipper?

3. What is the message of the story?

Words to reflect on
It takes three to get married: a man and a woman and God.

Gen 1:27

God created man in His own image,

1. Man is intrinsically good. 2. Man is basically loving and selfgiving. 3. Man is born, lives and dies in community.

Gen 1:27

God created man in His own image,

Gen 2:18 Then the LORD God said, "It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him.

and the rib which the LORD God had taken from the man he made into a woman and brought her to Genesis 2:22 the man.

"Marriage and conjugal love are by their nature ordained toward the begetting and educating of children.

Genesis 2:24 For this reason a man shall leave his father and his mother, and be joined to his wife; and they shall become ONE FLESH.

The best way to express the meaning of marriage is to speak of it in terms of a covenant. A covenant in the Scripture is a binding agreement or bond between two parties. Gods dealing with his people was within the context of a covenant.

Both the Old and the New Testament used marriage as a symbol of Gods own faithfulness to his people (CFC, 1888-95).

The reality of marriage as a covenant has its basis in the story of Creation.

When the Lord God brought the woman to the man, the man said:

This one, at last, is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; This one shall be called woman, for out of her man this one has been taken. That is why a man leaves his father and mother and clings to his wife, and the two of them become one body. Genesis 2:23-24

TheEphesians 5:22-23

Christian Wives and Husbands. Wives should be submissive to their husbands as if to the Lord because the husband is the head of his wife just as Christ is the Head of His body the Church, as well as its Savior. As the Church submits to Christ, so wives should submit to their husbands in everything.

Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the Church. He gave himself up for her make her holy, purifying her in the bath of water by the power of the word, to present to himself a glorious church, holy and immaculate without stain or wrinkle or anything of that sort. Husbands should love their wives as they do their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself.

TheEphesians 5:22-23 Observe that no one ever hates his own flesh; no, he nourishes it and takes care of it as Christ cares for the Church for we are members of his body. For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother, and shall cling to his wife, and the two shall be made one,

This is the great foreshadowing; I mean that it refers to Christ and the Church. In any case, each one should love his wife as he loves himself, the wife of her part showing respect for her husband.

ThePaul, in this passage, exhorts married Christians to a strong mutual love. In verse 31, Paul quotes Genesis 2:24 to show that marriage is instituted by God. He sees Christian marriage as taking on a new meaning that symbolizes the intimate relationship of love between Christ and the Church.

Both Husbands and wives are admonished to be subordinate to one another out of reverence for Christ

Canon 1055
The marriage covenant, by which a man and a woman establish between themselves a partnership of their whole life, and which of its own very nature is ordered to the well-being of the spouses and to the procreation and upbringing of children, has, between the baptized, been raised by Christ the Lord to the dignity of a sacrament.

Consequently, a valid marriage contract cannot exist between baptized persons without its being by the very fact a sacrament.

Canon 1056 The essential properties of marriage are unity and indissolubility; in Christian marriage they acquire a distinctive firmness by reason of the sacrament.

The effects of Marriage

Canon 1134 From a valid marriage there arises between the spouses a bond which of its own nature is permanent and exclusive.
