Non Coherent Binary FSK & DPSK

Non coherent Binary FSK

In binary FSK , the transmitted signal is defined as

Where carrier frequency fi equals to one of the possible values of f1 & f2 . In non coherent detection of frequency modulated wave, the receiver consists of pair of matched filters followed by envelope detectors The upper path of the receiver is matched to & the lower path is matched to The resultant envelope detector outputs are sampled & their values are compared (l1 & l2) respectively. The non coherent binary FSK is a special case of orthogonal modulation with T = Tb & E = Eb.

Non coherent Binary FSK

Where Tb is bit duration & Eb is signal energy /bit . The average probability of error for non coherent binary FSK is given by

Differential Phase-Shift Keying

Differential phase-shift keying eliminates the need for a coherent refer ence signal at the receiver by combining two basic operations 1. Differential encoding of the input binary wave 2. Phase Shift Keying In sending symbol 0 ,we phase advance the current signal waveform by 180 degree In sending symbol 1 ,we leave the phase of the current signal wavef orm unchanged. The receiver is equipped with storage capability, it measures the relative phase difference between the waveforms received during two successive bit intervals Let s1(t) denote the transmitted DPSK signal for interval . If the transmitted DPSK signal for the second interval

Differential Phase-Shift Keying

where transmitter input having symbol 1 for first interval & the second i nterval for transmission of 1 leave the carrier phase unchanged So s1(t) define as

Similarly S2(t) denotes the transmitted DPSK signal with binary symbol 0

DPSK is a special case of orthogonal modulation with T = Tb & E =2Eb The average probability of error for DPSK is given by

Differential Phase-Shift Keying

Generation of DPSK, differential encoding at transmitter starts with arbitrary bit (reference) & a differential encoded sequence {dk) gener ated using logical equation

Where bk is the input binary digit at time KTb & dk-1 is the previous value of the differential encoded digit Thus a differential encoded Sequence is used to phase-shift key a carrier with phase angle of 0 and radians.

Demodulation of DPSK , Correlator output is proportional to the cosi ne of the difference between carrier phase angles in two correlator i nputs If o/p of correlator is +ve,phase difference between the receive d pair of bits lie inside the range of /2 to /2 ,the receiver decides in favor of symbol 1 If o/p of correlator is -ve,phase difference between the received pair of bits lie outside the range of /2 to /2 ,the receiver decides in favor of symbol 1
