Another Index for measuring Periodontal Disease designed by Henry C. Sandler and Sigmund Stahl average percent of the teeth per person showing positive sign of periodontal disease

The

In order for the tooth to be classified as having periodontal disease, it must meet one or more of the following minimum criteria:

Gingivitis

Gingival

Hyperplasia

Gingival

Necrosis

Deepening

of the gingival sulcus of 3 mm

or more

Displacement

of the tooth more than 1 mm in any direction.

Radiographic

evidence of bone loss over 3 mm from the cemento-enamel junction

If the diagnosis is doubtful, it should be classified as negative. individual tooth present in the mouth is rated as to the existence or absence of periodontal disease. is no differentiation as to the character of the lesion, its chronicity, the degree of bone loss, or the prognosis.

Periodontal disease rate was developed by Henry C. Sandler and Sigmund Stahl in 1960 in their study to measure the prevalence of periodontal disease in a hospitalized population. The sample studied was drawn from patients who were hospitalized at the Veterans Administration Hospital, Brooklyn, New York.

The purpose of the study was to determine whether persons with confirmed diagnoses of specific diseases demonstrate a greater prevalence of periodontal disease than those who are in relatively good health

Results of the Study:

The

influence of generalized diseases upon periodontal health was not remarkable

Periodontal

disease was also higher, but not significantly, in patients with arteriosclerosis and GI disorders

The

number of tooth present in the subject affects the increase or decrease of the periodontal disease rate
