WHAT IS USB

USB: USB stands for Universal Serial Bus. It is a serial bus standard toconnectdevices to a host computer. Provides an expandable, fast,bi-directional, lowcost, hot pluggable Plug and Play serial hardware interface. Allows users to connect a widevariety of peripheralsto a computer and have them automatically configured and ready to use. Implemented to provide a replacement for legacy ports to make the addition ofperipheral devices quick and easy for the end user.

HISTORY OF USB
There have been three versions released priorto 3.0. USB 1.0 in January 1996 data ratesof 1.5Mbps up to 12 Mbps. USB 1.1 in September 1998 firstwidely used version of USB. USB 2.0 in April 2000. Major feature revision was the addition of a high speed transfer rate of 480 Mbps.

USB 3.0 OVERVIEW

The USB 3.0 is the upcoming version of the USB. The USB 3.0 is also called SUPER SPEED USB. USB 3.0 is the third major revision of the universal serial bus standard for computer connectivity. As its previous versions it also support theplug and playcapability, hot swapping etc. USB was designed to allow many peripherals to be connected using a single standardized interface socket. Other convenient features include providing power to lowconsumption devices & eliminating the need for anexternal power supplyand allowing many devices to be used without requiring manufacturer-specific device drivers to be installed.

FEATURES OF USB3.0
Single Connector type Replace all different legacy connectors with one welldefined standardized USB connector for all USB peripheral devices. Hot swapping Devices can be safely plugged and unplugged as needed while the computer is running (no need to reboot). Plug and play OS software automatically identifies, configures, and loads the appropriate driver when connection is made. The USB 3.0 specifications uses the same concepts of usb 2.0 but with many improvements and totally different

FEATURES OF USB3.0
In USB 3.0 dual bus architecture is allows both USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 operations to take place simultaneously, thus providing backward compatibility. USB 3.0 uses two uni directional data paths, One to receive data , and other to transmit. Connections are such that they also permit forward compatibility, that is run USB 3.0 devices on USB 2.0 ports.

USB 3.0 PERFOMANCE

USB 3.0 achieves the much higher performance by way of a number of technical changes. Perhaps the most obvious change is an additional physical bus that is added in parallel with the existing USB 2.0 bus. This means that where USB 2.0 previously had 4 wires (power, ground, and a pair for differential data), USB 3.0 adds 4 more for two pairs of differential signals (receive and transmit) for a combined total of 8 connections in the connectors and cabling. These extra two pairs were necessary to support the Super Speed USB target bandwidth requirements, because the two wire differential signals of USB 2.0 were not enough.

USB 3.0 utilizes a bi-directional data interface rather than USB 2.0's half-duplex arrangement, where data can only flow in one direction at a time. Without getting into any more technical mumbo jumbo, this all combines to give a ten-fold increase in theoretical bandwidth, and a welcome improvement noticeable by anyone when Super Speed USB products hit the market. USB 3.0 physical Super Speed bus combined in parallel with a physical USB 2.0 bus.
