Established by an Act of Parliament on 15th
September, 1978 under Chapter 69:06 of
the Laws of Malawi.

Achievements
• Erected traffic lights to reduce congestion at
Chitukuko, Bwandilo, Lilongwe Hotel, area 3/ Kamuzu
procession road junction, Lilongwe Technical College
and Lilongwe bridge, Natures Sanctuary and Nico
Centre junction in Lilongwe , Limbe Police junction,
Stanbic Limbe branch intersection and Soche/ Mount
Pleasant junction in Blantyre and Katoto Filling
station junction in Mzuzu. Traffic lights in Zomba and
Cross roads junction in Mzuzu including Mchesi/ M1
junction in Lilongwe have just been installed.
• Procured 113 scholar patrol equipments that was
donated to Ministry of education
• Procured 2 emergency rescue ambulances and
donated to Traffic Police
• Procured & donated three saloon highway traffic
patrol vehicles to Malawi Police Service
• Procured and donated four speed traps and six

• Launched the Road safety awareness &
enforcement month that was done jointly with
Traffic Police and Road Traffic Directorate that
saw accident reduced from 1027 people killed in
2005 to 921 killed in 2006 representing a 28%
decrease. A similar programme started on 10
December 2007 and ended on 3 January 2008
with a 13% reduction in December 07
• Trained 12000 drivers and 3000 motorcyclist in
defensive driving.
• Intensified civic education on radio, television and
newspapers
• Established district road safety committees in
Mangochi, Blantyre, Lilongwe, Nkhotakota,
Kasungu, Mwanza, Mulanje, Karonga, Nkhatabay,
Ntcheu, Dedza, Mchinji, Thyolo, Chiradzulu and
Balaka

• 4,435 road crashes occurred in 2007
• 738 were fatal
• 5,586 were reported in 2006
• 21% decrease
• 9,422 people were involved in 2007
• 11,521 people were involved in 2006
• 20% decrease
• 839 people were killed in 2007
• 912 people killed in 2006
• 8% decrease

Way forward
Need for Govt & Insurance companies to
consider:
• Investing more in road safety activities
• introducing speed governors
• Investing in pedestrian flyovers, cycle paths and
foot paths
• Creating an Accident Victim Fund
• Creating a Road Traffic Authority
• Phasing out four wheeled minibuses on longer
routes and introducing six wheeled minibuses
through duty waivers
• Increase insurance levy
• Influence driver behaviour through an effective
education programme i.e. seatbelt campaign
