SPrKL adopted the reach of Coldstream Creek that runs through Creekside Park as part of the City of Vernon and NORD Adopt-a-Stream Program. On May 15th about 20 SPrKLers put on their gloves, grabbed there garbage pickers and went to work. Six bags of garbage and recycling were collected and 25 willows stakes were planted. Great job crew!

Concerns, presented to NORD on April 7, 2010

On April 7th, 14 concerns were presented to the North Okanagan Regional District Board of Directors. This presentation can be found at spkl.ca. SPrKL President, Trina Koch, spent about 10 minutes presenting a power point to the Board that concisely listed each of the following (slightly abbreviated) concerns:
8. 9. about the lack of fencing along Coldstream Creek. about manure run-off entering a storm sewer outfall that enters Kal Lake within the Kinloch subdivision. that pharmaceuticals not removed from drinking water and Ogrogro are harmful to human health. that cosmetic pesticides and herbicides are entering the lake. that invasive aquatic plants are entering the lake via infected boats. about the congestion at the Kalavista Boat launch. That Silver Star effluent may be contaminating Coldstrem Creek.

QuickTime and a decompressor are needed to see this picture.

We are concerned that

1. 2. septic tanks or septic holding tanks at seasonal properties will fail, leak or spill. the property on the west side of the lake will be developed if the railway is decommissioned. landfill leachate is flowing into Kal Lake via fractured bedrock. drainage from Ogrogro compost piles are entering Kal Lake via Boltres Creek. that spray irrigation is entering the lake. chloride has increased 7 fold since 1974. that run-off from feedlots will continue to degrade the water quality of Coldstream Creek and Kal Lake

Coldstream Creek Restoration Project

SPrKL received funding from EcoAction Community Funding, EBA Engineering Consultants Ltd. and the District of Coldstream for the Coldstream Creek Restoration Project. The project allowed residents living along Coldstream Creek between Kirkland Dr. and McClounie Rd. the opportunity to obtain free riparian plants. Volunteers will help those that need it. All Coldstream Residents living along any creek were encouraged to attend the planting workshop at the Coldstream Municipality Hall on September 18th at 10:00 am. After the workshop, the planting began! Creekside Park will receive riparian plants too and fence on the south side of the park will protect 175 metres of riparian area.
