MEASUREMENTS OF QUANTITIES ASSOCIATED WITH LIGHT

(TERMS PREFIXED WITH LUMINOUS)

PHOTOMETRY
(DEFINITIONS, SYMBOLS AND UNITS)

Luminous Flux (); Lumen (lm): Luminous flux is rate of flow of luminous energy and is defined as the rate at which luminous energy is incident on a 1 m2 of surface area, 1 m away from an isotropic point source of 1 candela (cd) intensity. Related to source and receiver
Thus a 1 candela isotropic point source placed at the centre of a sphere of 1 m radius, produces 4 lumens.

PHOTOMETRY
(DEFINITIONS, SYMBOLS AND UNITS)

Quantity of light (Q); lm-s: Quantity of luminous energy released by a source in a given period. Related to source and receiver.

PHOTOMETRY
(DEFINITIONS, SYMBOLS AND UNITS)

Luminous Intensity (I); Candela (cd): In earlier days it was defined as the intensity of spermaceti candle of the specific weight burning at a specific rate. The luminous power of such a candle was also said to be one candela. Related to point source.
A monochromatic source of wavelength 555 nm whose radiant intensity is 1/683 W/sr, is said to have luminous intensity one candela, luminous power of 1 candela and emitting 4 lumens.

PHOTOMETRY
(DEFINITIONS, SYMBOLS AND UNITS)

Luminous Intensity (I); Candela (cd): Luminous intensity of a point source in a particular direction, is equal to flux emitted by the point source per unit solid angle in that direction. Related to point source.

PHOTOMETRY
(DEFINITIONS, SYMBOLS AND UNITS)

Illuminance (E); lux(lx): Illuminance on a surface is the area density of luminous flux incident on the surface. Related to receiver.

PHOTOMETRY
(DEFINITIONS, SYMBOLS AND UNITS)

Luminance (L); cd/m2: Luminace of a broad source is defined as the area density of the luminous intensity leaving in the direction of viewing. Related to broad source.

PHOTOMETRY
(DEFINITIONS, SYMBOLS AND UNITS)

Luminance Exitance (M); lm/ m2: Luminance exitance of abroad source is defined as the area density of luminous flux leaving the source in all directions in front of the source. Related to broad source.

PHOTOMETRY
(DEFINITIONS, SYMBOLS AND UNITS)

Luminous spectral efficacy (K); lm/ w: It is the luminous flux emitted by a source in the wave length range of and +d per unit watt of the radiant energy. Related to eye.

PHOTOMETRY
(DEFINITIONS, SYMBOLS AND UNITS)

Luminous spectral efficiency (V): It is the efficacy of the eye for a particular wave length normalised to its maximum value of 683 lm/w at 555 nm. Related to eye.
