Planning Tools
Paper & pencil
Use this before using any computerised, highly sophisticated tools ! Collect design information Sketch of network layout Network topology Estimate sizes and quantities Agree planning budget with corresponding departments NOKIA 1999 EXPLAIN_8.PPT/ 24.8.99 /WORKSHOP

Limitations of Tools
Precision of results validity of assumptions? reliability of modelling? Tools need initial design proposal fundamental ideas creative thinking user's intelligence There are no self-configuring tools garbage in - garbage out rule applies strictly

Tools are just tools intelligence is Yours!

Measurement Tools: ParTet (1/2)

ParTet program is used to measure TETRA radio network. Measured data are viewed and saved for later processing The basic features are:

serving cell information (signal level, quality,Tx power, BER, C1, C2, location area)
neighbour information (channel number, location area, frequency band) layer 3 messages (broadcast layer messages UpLink and DownLink, full message decode)

NOKIA 1999 EXPLAIN_8.PPT/ 24.8.99 /WORKSHOP

GIS Tools: MapInfo

Graphic software to work with geographically referenced objects Objects organized in different layers to easily overlap/create different scenarios Main advantage for planning: possibility to easily display detailed information for sites within the corresponding map Possibility to import site information from Excel or CellTracker Easily customizable for other purposes: SARFs
16 NOKIA 1999 EXPLAIN_8.PPT/ 24.8.99 /WORKSHOP

GIS (Locator) Tools: GPS

Global Positioning System Based on a constellation of orbital satellites

CDMA coding of the signal, different codes for civilian or military use
Precision: 100 m (civilian) some meters (military) using the default WGS84 datum Used to get coordinates of visited sites during site surveys and locating measurements. Watch out !!! Map datum and GPS datum must be THE SAME, otherwise bigger errors come out

17

NOKIA 1999 EXPLAIN_8.PPT/ 24.8.99 /WORKSHOP

GIS (Locator) Tools: GPS (2/3)

Global Positioning System worldwide positioning system weather- independent permanently available X-, Y-, Z-coordinates, velocities Accuracies accuracy of ca. 18m technically feasible for civilians deliberately (!!) decreased to approx. 100m accuracy at 95% probability 300m at 99.9% probability
18 NOKIA 1999 EXPLAIN_8.PPT/ 24.8.99 /WORKSHOP

GIS (Locator) Tools: GPS (3/3)

Space segment 24 satellites (bird cage) 6 orbital planes with 4 satellites each inclination: 55 deg, orbit time 11h 58 Control segment master control station in Falcon air-base (Colorado/USA) 4 observer stations around the earth near the equator User segment (= receiver) follows up to 6 satellites, selects best four 3-dimensional position 3-dimensional velocity
