How much is too much

For 41 years, my operating principle was; work hard, play hard and spend some time as a father. I felt my life was perfectly balanced. It felt like it had everything in it, all in the right amounts. Jack Welch

But looking back, it is clear that the balance I chose had consequences for the people around me at home and at the office. For instance, my kids were raised , largely alone, by their mother, Carolyn.

My defense, if there is one, is that those were the times. Fathers were different then. In general, it was assumed that wives stayed at home to make everything run smoothly.

Definition of Work-Life Balance


Worklife balance is a broad concept including proper prioritizing between "work" (career and ambition) on the one hand and "life" (Health, pleasure, leisure, family and spiritual development) on the other.

How do we know that we are out of balance.

What are the warning signs


Physiological Heart pounding, muscle tension, shortness of breath, dry mouth, high blood pressure, Fatigue, insomnia, weakness, dizziness, headache, stomach distress. Psychological Depressed, helpless, anxious, nervous, confused, worried, bored, negative attitude/thoughts, unable to concentrate, suspicious, lethargic.

Balance is elusive and difficult to maintain. Compromises are constantly made, with the scales of balance shifting along with the occasional long workday or work assignment, family obligations, or any one of a number of lifes little surprises.

Achieving work-life balance is a process


Getting it right is an iterative process. You get better at it with experience and observation and eventually you will find it is not really hard. It is just what and how you do things. DO----LEARN----DO
