INTRODUCTION
One large component of Indian popular culture today is alcohol. A common stereotype for the effects of alcohol is that as a drug it acts as a stress antagonist. Why do we drink? When do we drink ? and How much do we drink? Does the alcohol do good for the health ?
SOME FACTS: Drinking more than 6 pegs of alcohol/week is associated with the increase in blood pressure, which can be reversed if the intake is reduced. Alcohol can affect most parts of the body and in addition to cause liver damage, can cause infertility, skin damage, Heart Damage, cancer and stroke.
Many accidents, episodes of violence and risk-taking behaviors, eg: unprotected sex, are associated with alcohol. Excess alcohol in those under the 20 years can damage the brain while it is still developing. One glass of alcohol in a party may slightly reduce the changes of developing CHD. Safe drinking means drinking 1-2 glasses/ year.
ALCOHOL PERCENTAGE
Rum: 50 - 60% Wiskey, Gin, Brandy: 40 - 45% Port, Shery: 20% Wine: 10 - 15% Beers: 4 8%.
Arrack is a liquor, distilled from palm, rice, sugar or jaggery Strength is 40 -50%. Chloral hydrate and potassium bromide, diazepam added for greater kick.
SYMPTOMS
The patient suffers from nausea, vomiting, anorexia, diarrhoea, jaundice, tremors of the tongue and hands, insomnia, loss of memory, impaired power of judgment, hypoproteinaemia and general anasarca. peripheral neuritis, dementia occur in the last stage.
Alcoholic Polyneuritis Alcoholic Paranoia: fixed delusions. Acute Alcoholic Hallucinations: Persistent hallucinations develop within 48 hours after cessation of alcohol intake. The hallucinations may be auditory or visual. (unpleasant and disturbing)
Alcoholic Epilepsy:(RUM FITS) Wernicke's Encephalopathy: This results from Vitamin B1, deficiency. Symptoms include disturbance of consciousness (ranging from mild confusion to coma). opthalmoplegia, Lateral nystagmus. ataxia, delirium and stupor.
Korsakoff psychosis, in which impairment of short-term memory, Cardiac arrhythmia's : tachyarrhythmia's are common which may cause sudden death. Marchiafava's Syndrome: Degeneration of the corpus callosum. Mallory-Weiss Syndrome : Ruptured esophagus with mediastinitis occurs .
Malnutrition. Gastric and peptic ulcer. Cirrhosis. Myocarditis. Pancreatitis. Mental illness: Depression and high risk for suicide.
As dependence grows, the person slips further away from family and friends. It will make the person to get addicted to consume alcohol for all the day. Alcohol such as beer, wine, whiskey, rum and cheap liquor are more dangerous to health and can harm to all the organs of the body. Alcohol consumption along with cigarette can increase the chance by 50% of heart failure and lung cancer Alcohol consumption can cause liver failure in the chronic alcoholic and can leads to fetal diseases. Alcohol leads to dependence and withdrawn suddenly can cause psychiatric syndromes
