Thanksgiving Day (celebrate on fourth Thursday of November)


History: In the year 1620, a ship named May Flower brought 102 English people to Massachusetts, America. The ship passenger were puritan (pilgrim). the Indians help the pilgrims to plant corn (maize) and other crops. In October 1621 they celebrate a good harvest. They held a feast which featured among other food wild turkey which is native to North America. The day is held to thank their God for His blessing.

The day is marked by families gathering together to enjoy the traditional dinner of roast turkey and to speak to one another of the thing for which they are thankful.

The day is one on which Americans also show concern for the poor. Organization or churches also provide food or serve dinner for the needy.

Memorial Day
This holiday, on the 4th Monday of every may, is a day on which American honor the dead. Originally a day on which flags or flowers (for the soldier who died in the American Civil War). The day on which people stopped wearing there heavier, warmer clothes and started wearing lighter, more summery apparel.

Independence Day
( Fourth of July) This day is regarded as the birthday of the United States as a free and independent nation.

Labor Day ( First Monday of September)


This holiday has purpose is to honor the nations working people

Columbus Day ( October, 12 )


This day commemorating Italian navigator Christoper Columbus landing in the New World on October 12, 1492.

Veteran Day ( November,11) This holiday was originally called Armistice Day and was established to honor those American who had served in the First World War.

Election day
The United States has many election because there are so many level of government. Each states has its own election official such as governor, the chief administrative official and state legislators. State official are elected on a day that was selected by congress for national election in the nation s early years. That day is the first Tuesday in November.

President Election Day is held every four years. House of Representative and senate are elected every two-years.

Traditions and Holidays


Easter The Christian feast of the Resurrection of Jesus ( always falls on a Sunday). For most Americans, It is day of worship and a gathering of the family. Many follow old traditions such as be dyeing of hard boiled eggs and the giving of gift of candy eggs, rabbits and chicks for the children.

Christmas Day on December 25


Christmas is a most important religious holiday for Christians, who attend special church service to celebrate the birth of Jesus of Nazareth. Some Christians traditions have become American tradition, such as gift giving, send greeting cards, Santa Claus, home decoration, Christmas dinner. New years day is also a Christians holiday.

Valentine day (Celebrate on 14 of February) Valentine is the name of early Christians martyr whose feast day was once observe on that day . On this day American give special symbolic gift to people they love (greeting card, candy or flower). Halloween day (the last day of October) this day has special means for children who dress in funny or ghostly costume and knock at neighborhood doors after shouting trick or treat so, they are given gift of candy or money.

Time Off
The amount of vacation time varies greatly, but most people get one or two weeks a year after working for the same company for a year or more. More vacation time is given after longer periods of work.

Ethnic Observances
The US is a nation of many religious and ethnic groups. Many of this have holy day or special customs related to their religion or to their nation of origin. For example: - Chinese New Year
