Hazard

Anything or event that has the potential to cause harm or ill-health Accident An unplanned and unexpected event that could lead to an injury, loss of life and/or property and damage to environment Near-miss An incident where no injury, ill-health or damage to property is recorded, but under slightly different conditions, an accident could occur

This is the possibility of a hazard causing an injury with the severity of the injury

What Safety Is About


SAFETY..is part of everyday living. It is an
important consideration for everyone in everything he/she does, in the home, at work or play, on streets and highways wherever he/she goes ..It is freedom from accidents/incidents that cause injury, ill-health and sometimes death.

to work (health wise) or even better and making sure that the companys investment is intact.

This involves a number of factors; Management commitment and employee involvement Worksite safety analysis Hazard identification and controls Health and safety training and orientation

Understand your responsibilities

You are responsible for your safety and that of

others who may be affected by what you do or omit It is the responsibility of the employee to cooperate with the employer in maintaining a safe workplace/site Report all accidents, injury, near misses, ill-health and perceived hazardous situations and acts to their supervisor or safety officer Use provided PPEs in the right way

manual handling is not done the proper way If manual handling is a must, it should be done the proper way Controls Eliminate manual handling altogether Ask for help if object is too heavy Carry objects the right way

This simply means not placing equipments and

materials where they are supposed to be leaving them littered around the work area Poor housekeeping could pose; Trip and fall hazards Fire hazard

Very poisonous Rotten egg smell High concentration deadens sense of smell Controls Be alert to the rotten egg smell of Hydrogen

Sulphide When the Hydrogen Sulphide alarm is sounded, move in the opposite direction of the wind

Snakes and Insects

Snakes are common at this time of the year


Snakes and insects hide in cracks and crevices They could also be found within stacked materials

and equipments

Controls

Make noise to scare away snakes, insects and

other reptiles before going into a work area where they could be found If a snake is spotted, leave it to crawl away Should a worker be beaten, the victim should not panic First aid should be administered and victim taken for professional medical attention Use appropriate PPE when working in snake prone areas

These are unwanted events that could lead to

bodily injury and/or damage of property
