Water and biological agriculture

Water is essential for agriculture:

13500 litres of water for 1 kg of meat 590 litres of water for 1 kg of wheat 524 litres of water for 1 kg of barley 454 litres of water for 1 kg of corn

In le-de-France, the presence of contaminants pollutes 70% of the underground water and 65% of the rivers. The causes of these kind of pollutions are: domestic life, the industry, the road maintenance and at last the agriculture. 66% of the nitrates present in the soil are caused by the agriculture. However, water is vital, not only for the local ecosystems but also for the franciliens (local population of le-de-france)

The European guideline Cadre sur leau directs us to an ambitious goal: to reach a good ecological state of the waters between now and 2015. Biological agriculture can be a solution in the struggle against the pollution of water sources caused by agriculture.

On the 16th May of 2011, 70 pupils of the first and second year of French secondary school have met with an agriculture professional.

Mister CHATELET, a market gardener at Longpont-surorge in le- deFrance gave us a warm welcome at his biological farming concern.

Biological agriculture and preservation of the quality of the water:

Biological agriculture allows us to cultivate without using chemical products. No chemical products are being dumped in the adjoining water flow (called lORGE) which is why this kind of agriculture contributes to the quality of water sources.

Some agricultural techniques help to decrease the use of chemical products:

Production in closed greenhouses evade the penetration of insects and restrict diseases, that is why, in an important way, we can lessen the use of pesticides and with it the pollution of water.

The ecological irrigation of crops:

The ecological irrigation of crops: This irrigation system has been made to water the plants. The water streams only through the irrigation system. Thanks to this irrigation system Mr CHATELET is able to give his plants the water they need and he saves water which is good for sustainable development.

To control the use of water

Respect the soil

Traditional agriculture:
It is an old-fashioned machine for planting potatoes. Two people sit on its seats. The potatoes are placed in a wooden box. There are some gaps in this wooden box through which the potatoes fall and these gaps lead to some sort of a tube. At the bottom of the machine there are small spades which dig small holes in the earth for the potatoes.

Cabbage:

In this greenhouse the cabbages have been eaten by insects. The cultivator does not use chemical products in order to protect the environment but he uses ladybirds instead for example.

Solutions to protect water resources:

1) We can collect the leaching fluids and use them to remove the pesticides and discharge of them using bio filters and artificial filtrating swamps. 2) Recycle the overland flow water of cultivated crops.
