Commonly Prescribed Drugs in the OPD

For Pain
1. Mefenamic Acid (Ponstan SF) 500 mg/cap
1 cap every 6 to 8 hours prn for Pain, on a full stomach

2. Celecoxib (Celebrex) 400 mg/cap


1 capsule OD prn for Pain

3. Celecoxib (Celebrex) 200 mg/cap


1 capsule every 12 hours prn for Pain

4. Etoricoxib (Arcoxia) 120 mg/cap


1 capsule OD prn for Pain

For Pain
5. Paracetamol 500 mg/tab
1 tablet every 4 hours prn for Pain

6. Paracetamol 650 mg/tab


1 tablet every 6 hours prn for Pain

7. Paracetamol + Tramadol (Algesia)


1 tablet every 6 to 8 hours prn for Pain

8. Tramadol 50 mg/cap
1 capsule every 8 hours prn for Pain

For Fever
1. Paracetamol 500 mg/ tab Take one tablet every 4 hours as needed for Fever (Temp. > 37.7 C) 2. Paracetamol 650 mg/ tab Take one tablet every 6 hours as needed for Fever (Temp. > 37.7 C)

Antibiotics
1. Amoxicillin 500 mg/cap

1 capsule every 8-12 hours for 7 days


1 capsule every 6 hours (round the clock) for 7 days

2. Cloxacillin 500 mg/cap 3. Clindamycin 300 mg/cap (Dalacin C)

1 capsule every 6 hours (round the clock) for 7 days


1 tablet every 12 hours (round the clock) for 7 days

4. Co-Amoxiclav 625 mg/tab (Augmentin / Natravox) 5. Cefuroxime 500 mg/tab

1 tablet every 12 hours for 7 days


1 tablet every 12 hours (for 5 to 7 days)

6. Ciprofloxacin 500 mg/tab

For Colds
1. Phenylephrine + Paracetamol (No Drowse Decolgen) Take one tablet every 6 hours for 3 days 2. Nafarin A - Take one tablet every 6 hours for 3 to 5 days For those with Hypertension 1. Sinupret Take one tablet 3 times a day for 3 to 5 days

For Acid Peptic Disease


Treatment is usually one to two weeks 1. Famotidine 20 mg/tab (H2 Bloc)
1 tablet 30 minutes before breakfast and 30 minutes before dinner

1 tablet 30 minutes before breakfast and 30 minutes before dinner
1 tablet at bedtime

3. Al + Mg Hydroxide + Simeticone (Maalox Plus)


For Pregnant: 1. Al + Mg Hydroxide (Maalox)
Take 30 mL upto 3 times a day as needed for persistent abdominal pain

Acute Gastroenteritis
Assess hydration status always 1. Oral Rehydration Salts (Hydrite) Dissolve contents of one sachet in one glass of water and drink as needed for hydration 2. Racecadotril (Hidrasec) 100 mg/cap Take one capsule 3 times a day until stools are formed 3. Pinaverium Br (Eldicet) 50 mg/tab Take one tablet every 8 hours as needed for abdominal pain/ spasm

For Throat pain


1. Hexetidine Gargle (Bactidol) Gargle with 30 mL 3 times a day after meals for 7 days 2. Benzydamine lozenges (Difflam) Dissolve one lozenge on tongue every 3 to 4 hours as needed for throat pain 3. Benzydamine gargle (Difflam) Gargle with 30 mL every 4 hours as needed for throat pain 4. Benzydamine spray (Difflam) Spray 2 times to throat every 4 hours as needed for throat pain

For Allergy
1. Loratidine 10 mg/tab Take one tablet once a day for 5 days 2. Levocetirizine 5 mg/tab (Xyzal) Take one tablet once a day for 5 days 3. Hydroxyzine (Iterax) 10 mg/tab Take one tablet upto 3 times a day as needed for itchiness 4. Hydroxyzine (Iterax) 25 mg/tab Take one tablet at bedtime or once a day as needed for itchiness Always warn patients that Hydroxyzine can cause drowsiness

For Dizziness
1. Betahistine (Serc) 24 mg/tab Take one tablet 2 times a day as needed for dizziness 2. Cinnarizine (Stugeron) 75 mg/tab Take one tablet once a day for severe dizziness
