Introduction

In 1984, Michelle McNamara became obsessed with cold cases when her neighbor was murdered and never received justice. As an adult, McNamara created the blog True Crime Diary, where she picked apart cold cases and dead leads.

In particular, the Golden State Killer fascinated her: Here was a man who terrorized neighborhoods, committed 50 rapes, and killed at least 10 people. Yet for over 40 years, he slipped out of law enforcement’s hands.
