O homem nasceu para viver em sociedade. Apesar de todos os paradoxos
sustentados por Joo Jacques Rousseau contra o estado social,
incontestavel que s neste estado que elle se pde aperfeioar
intellectual e moralmente. O selvagem feroz, cruel e sanguinario.
Com as naes succede o mesmo que com os individuos. Assim como os
individuos isolados no progridem, assim tambem as naes que vivem
separadas das outras permanecem estacionarias. Quanto mais amplas forem
as relaes sociaes maior ser o desenvolvimento da intelligencia
humana. Se o commercio abre o caminho para a civilizao e fraternidade
dos povos, a mais alta cultura litteraria e scientifica que poder
faz-las attingir o seu auge. A cultura litteraria, alm de ser
indispensavel a todo o homem, seja qual fr a sua posio social, o
factor mais poderoso da solidariedade universal. Quando as obras
litterarias e scientificas em que se revela a maior pujana do espirito
humano estiverem vulgarizadas em todos os paises, ento a
fraternidade universal no ser certamente um sonho vo, prestar-se-ha o
culto mais ardente liberdade e egualdade, finalizaro as guerras,
que so verdadeiros crimes sociaes. So os eloquentes escriptores, os
sublimes poetas e os eminentes sabios que mais tm contribuido para o
progresso intellectual e moral do genero humano; devemos pois tributar
as mais ardentes homenagens a todos os bemfeitores da humanidade, a
todos os grandes homens que a tm honrado com o seu genio litterario,
scientifico ou philosophico.
So rarissimas as manifestaes populares que no so excitadas pelas
paixes politicas. Este facto um triste symptoma da profunda
ignorancia que ainda lavra no nosso pais.
As homenagens prestadas aos grandes escriptores e aos sabios eximios
devem ter por unica origem a gratido popular pelos relevantissimos
servios que prestaram, pelos grandes esforos por elles envidados para
instruir e moralizar a sociedade.
Bem sei que a politica indispensavel para o progresso dos povos, mas
tambem certo que no campo da politica se pem ordinariamente as
paixes partidarias acima dos affectos mais nobres e sublimes do corao
humano, acima do amor da verdade e da justia, da rectido e da
imparcialidade que devem caracterizar todo o homem de bem, todo o
cidado honrado e virtuoso. um espectaculo asss desagradavel o vr
que, no campo da politica vil e mesquinha, de um lado se encontram
homens sempre promptos a adular os poderosos da terra, todos os
tyrannos; seja qual fr a denominao que se lhes d; do outro,
individuos que, sob a mascara das doutrinas mais avanadas, procuram
lisonjear as paixes muitas vezes ignobeis e mesquinhas das turbas
analphabetas, ignorantes e fanaticas. O homem que s procura a verdade e
o bem, que no se deixa dominar pelas paixes politicas, que imparcial
e recto, que ousa fallar ou escrever sem preconceitos contra a profunda
corrupo do seu seculo e do seu pais, que no hesita em vituperar os
vicios de todas as classes sociaes, que no vende a sua consciencia no
os seus escriptos.
O sr. Theophilo Braga, na sua _Historia do romantismo_, diz que
Herculano no se elevou acima da metaphysica christ; mas o distincto
professor esqueceu-se de accrescentar que no tempo de Herculano a maior
parte dos grandes espiritos que tanto illustraram o seu seculo nos
paizes mais adiantados da Europa e da America, se achavam no mesmo
estado psychologico e que a philosophia positiva ainda no conseguiu
derribar o espiritualismo.
Em todas as escolas philosophicas tem havido pensadores profundos. O
espiritualismo christo no impediu Herculano de ser um dos mais
eminentes historiadores do seu seculo, assim como no tirou mais
modernamente ao immortal Pasteur a glria de ser um sabio de primeira
ordem, um dos maiores bemfeitores da humanidade. No obstante as grandes
modificaes por que passou o altissimo espirito de Victor Hugo, eu
considero o seu christianismo, embora philosophico, incomparavelmente
mais puro do que o de Torquemada e S. Domingos de Gusmo, cujo
procedimento fanatico estava em completo antagonismo com os principios
sublimes, com as maximas sacrosantas proclamadas no Evangelho. Victor
Hugo, apesar do seu espiritualismo ardente e do seu enthusiasmo pela
moral evangelica, foi um dos escriptores mais eloquentes e philosophicos
que a Frana tem produzido. Se Guizot e Thierry na Frana, Cantu na
Italia, Maccaulay na Inglaterra, Herder e Niebuhr na Allemanha, Prescott
nos Estados-Unidos da America puderam ser ao mesmo tempo historiadores
de primeira ordem e espiritualistas christos, porque no poderia
succeder o mesmo em Portugal a Alexandre Herculano? Condemnar este
grande homem pelo seu espiritualismo ardente e pelas suas crenas
religiosas seria o mesmo que condemnar a sua epocha e a escola romantica
de que elle foi um dos mais distinctos ornamentos, seria faltar
justia e imparcialidade que deve ter o verdadeiro critico.
Creio que, em quanto a humanidade existir, ha de haver sempre
discordancia em materia philosophica. A historia da philosophia, diz
Herculano, a historia de um edificio comeado ha milhares d'annos
em que um seculo revolve os fundamentos que outro lanou, para lanar os
seus, os quaes egualmente so revolvidos pelo seculo seguinte, cujos
trabalhos condemnar o que vier aps elle. A duvida, a que o espirito de
Herculano era naturalmente propenso, como se revela em muitos dos seus
escriptos, impedia-o de se deixar dominar completamente pelas crenas
religiosas, que nunca exerceram a minima influencia nas suas
investigaes historicas. Esta minha opinio completamente opposta
que o sr. Theophilo Braga manifesta na Historia do romantismo quando
nega a Herculano a possibilidade de comprehender a vida politica do povo
portuguez pelo facto de ser um christo fervoroso e poetico. Mas o
distincto escriptor contradiz-se na mesma pgina quando, para deprimir
Herculano, faz os maiores elogios a Agostinho Thierry, que no era menos
christo do que o principe dos historiadores portugueses.
Nenhum escriptor do romanticismo foi apreciado to injustamente pelos
seus adversarios como Alexandre Herculano, o que para mim mais uma
prova do seu immenso valor. Herculano, que foi accusado de impio pelos
partidarios da reaco ultramontana e do jesuitismo, tem sido criticado
injustamente por alguns escriptores que, declarando-se sectarios do
positivismo, esto muito longe de seguir as pisadas de Taine e de
Littr, dois positivistas eminentes que, pelo seu caracter austero,
espirito philosophico e estylo elegante, primoroso, correcto e limpido,
se tornaram dignos da venerao no s da Frana mas de todo o mundo.
Venero todos os grandes homens, seja qual for a sua escola, porque
todos tm contribuido poderosamente para o progresso; o que detesto a
