DRAWING HORSES

tablet, Neither a tablet nor Photoshop is required to draw
“good” horse lineart. | have worked with amouse for
‘years, like any other artist. A tablet is just a nice tool to-help speed up the process, and |
reccomend that if you have the chance-to buy one, then you do. My work may look slightly
different than yours (because of the tablet pressure sensitivity) so don’t be alarmed. :)
A NOTE ON DRAWING HORSES
for years and by thousands of artists, horses have been called the most difficult animals to
draw. However, every little girl wants a pony, and thus, they’re loved and practiced, often.
This tutorial is going to focus mostly on drawing the horses face, neck, and shoulders, as
explaining how to do every aspect of the horse, in detail, is tough to fit into one tutorial. Just
remember that for some it takes years to master, and some can naturally do it in a few days:
with ease, Take your own experience into mind, and always practice. If you have your heart
set on being an equine artist, then follow your dreams. It gets easier to pursue with time.
(but i must say, harder to impress yourself as you get better.)

: today we are actually going work
on apiece that will wind up being a commission
lf for somebody!
rather than working with a complicated pose,
we’re going to do something fairly basic - and the
horse will just be standing still. First, we will get
our reference picture of the horse out.
ink he is gorgeous, as ilove paint
jorses, and while this picture could
look very nice as.a painting, we are
gging to draw himin an entirely
different pose than in the picture.
the picture is there to rererence his
spots and other markings. :)
iam going to draw our sketchinanice

between my sketch, and my “inking.”

“ okay so at this point i am happy with my head.
so now he needs a body. :D we are going to keep our
head, and start working our way down with the same
\ ‘technique. :)
| = i think it would be wise to add that horses have
\ all different shapes and thicknesses of their
\ \ necks. certain things accentuate certain
f—< features. thinness is more feminine whereas
® a /4 thick, muscular necks just scream stallion. also,
\ / the amount the neck is raised can say things for
. - the future piece, like mood. low necks = sad, or
tired. high = aggressive, dominant, happy, etc.

dont skimp out on your neck muscles.
ay MANLY HORSES RULE!
ihave already decided how i want my finished
painting to look (neck will be covered with hair)
but do NOT use that as an excuse to try to hide
your mistakes. remember. take pride in your
5 lines. make the as close to perfect as you can

thisis fine. sometimes it adds a nice element

he’s walking into the frame (ooor, you're really

also, don’t be afraid to bust out those pedigree books when you're working. some |
horses have very special conformation. like draft horses has feathery feet (hairy) |
and Thoroughbreds have legs like toothpicks. If you’re trying to draw a mustang,
you want thick and stocky. If you're trying to draw an AhklI-Teke, you want thin ( \
and elegant. And be aware of how groomed the horse is. A wild horse should have
some stray hairs growing, a well managed Arabian, should not. yy “A

for the “Inking” phase, | outline my original lines in black
to show you what the finished piece will look like, and so| don’t confuse A
myself whenlam painting. :)
and that’s all there is to it!
by the way, sometimes it can
be very helpful to start your
lines in the purple, and then ink
them later. | don't (and that’s.
why all my work is really sketchy)
but if you want clean lines like this.
that is a good way to doit!
this is not a coloring tutorial by any means, but after that, the next step (for white paint
horses) would be to add a white-pink color UNDER THE LINEART LAYER as your base coat.
we'll get into detailing color more, later;) f
