as the elements of his individual career and indeed, of his personal drama.31
Soynka. Comentando dois livros de poemas de Soynka, Idanre and Other
Poems e A Shuttle in the Crypt, Emmanuel Ngara afirma:
Most of the poems (...) either are simply impenetrable or have no emotional
appeal. There is verbal dexterity but it is observed by the authors obssession
with difficult words and complicated constructions. As if obscurity were
not enough, Soynkas poetry fails also to appeal to the emotions, the
imagination or the intellect. It is much too abstract (...).32

TEXTO INTEGRAL DOS POEMAS CITADOS
Ikeja, Friday, Four OClock
They were but gourds for earth to drink therefrom
The ladden trucks, mirage of breath and form
Unbidden offering on the lie of altars
A crop of wrath when hands retract and reason
falters
No feast but the eternal retch of human surfeit
No drink but dregs at reckoning of loss and profit
Let nought be wasted, gather up for the recurrent
session
Loaves of lead, lusting in the suns recession
Civilian and Soldier
My apparition rose from the fall of lead,
Declared, Im a civilian. It only served
To aggravate your fright. For how could I
Have risen, a being of this world, in that hour
Of impartial death! And I thought also: nor is
Your quarrel of this world.
You stood still
For both eternities, and oh I heard the lesson
Of your training sessions, cautioning Scorch earth behind you, do not leave
