Pedros Project
Play Hangman to introduce the word competitions.
Then explain that the story is about a science
competition. Ask the class to think of different types
of competitions: swimming, football, story writing,
poetry, painting, etc. Invite volunteers to tell the class
about competitions theyve taken part in.
While you read

Stop and check comprehension. Make a statement
and ask the class to give you the thumbs up if its true
and thumbs down if its false. Ask volunteers to correct
false statements.

Make a class tree: Discuss why the conservation of

rainforests is so important (theyre a habitat for rare
animals and plants, the trees take in carbon dioxide and
produce oxygen which we need to breathe). Think about
things we can all do to protect the environment: recycle
paper, use both sides of pieces of paper, reuse plastic
bags etc. Give out green paper and ask the children
to draw round their hands and cut them out. Then ask
them to write 2 or 3 green resolutions on their hands.
Stick a tree trunk made of brown paper to the wall and
ask the students to stick on the hands as leaves.

Read and decode the article.
Explain that the school newspaper has written
an article about Pedro and the competition. Point
out that some words in the article are missing and

Write the speech bubble on the board: Hello! I like

to look at the word box and find words to complete
the speech bubble (experiments, scientist). Then
ask the class to look at the remaining speech
bubbles and complete them.
Extension
Ask the children: Do you like Pedros project? and
invite them to explain why or why not. Ask them about
Lukes project too. Ask them to think of different ideas
for a science project. Give out white paper and ask
each child to draw their idea for the science project
(for example, machines or robots that can do different
things). Write a model description of the project on the
board for the students to copy and complete: This is a
______________. It can ____________.

Draw a simple table on the board with three columns

and four rows. Write a heading in each column:
Country / Capital City / Monument. Elicit the names of

France and Italy) and write them into the first column.
Ask students to copy the table in their notebooks and
complete it by looking back at the story and filling in the
names of the capital cities and monuments. Correct by
inviting volunteers to the board to complete the table.

Review the days of the week with the class and
write them up on the board. Brainstorm different
things that students do on those days and write
them up. Tell the students that this is a diary.
Explain that the different pages on the worksheet

Captain Jacques Cousteau was a famous French oceanographer. In

1930, he studied at the Naval Academy and trained to become a pilot.
Unfortunately, he had a car accident and couldnt fly any more.
In 1936, he fell in love with the sea when he went swimming underwater
with goggles. In 1943, he invented the scuba (Self-Contained Underwater
Breathing Apparatus). With a scuba, people could stay underwater for longer.

People started making pottery 12,000 years ago

in Japan. They formed pots with clay. Sometimes
they used sand, shells or a special paint called
glaze to make the pots stronger. Then, they baked
them in a fire or in a kiln to make them hard. After
that, they cooked food in the pots or used them as
containers for water. Some cultures made pots in
the shape of animals for special ceremonies.
In many cases, people used a specific kind
of pottery to identify their cultures. The Greeks
decorated their pots with scenes from daily life.
The Romans used the famous red clay, terra cotta.
Later on, the Chinese produced a delicate form of
white pottery called porcelain. People all over the
world bought it. It was difficult to transport and very
expensive.
Nowadays, pottery is a popular art form. People

Devils Tower is an amazing rock formation in the state

of Wyoming, in the USA. Its 386 metres high. Every year,
thousands of tourists from all over the world come to see
it. Its also a very popular place for climbing.
For Native Americans, Devils Tower is a special
place. There are different legends about how it
formed. One legend tells the story of seven sisters
who were playing in the woods when some bears
started chasing them 1 .
They ran to a small rock and stood on it 2 . When

the bears were getting close, they said, Please, rock,
save us! 3 The rock listened to the girls and grew
high into the sky 4 . The bears tried to climb up the

The Galapagos Islands are a group of volcanic

islands on the Equator. They are about nine hundred
kilometres off the west coast of Ecuador. There
are thirteen large islands and many smaller ones.
Many species of plants and animals are unique to
the Galapagos. There are several species of reptiles
there, including lizards, turtles and snakes.
The most famous visitor to the Galapagos Islands
was Charles Darwin. He was an English biologist.
He visited the islands in 1835 on a ship called the
Beagle. Darwin collected plants and animals to
study. When Darwin returned to England, in 1836,
he used his observations to support his theory of
evolution. It explains that species change over a
long period of time to adapt to their environment.

Young Learner & Trinity Exams

The Cambridge Young Learner exams are designed
for children aged from 7 to 12 years old. They are
tested normally in their own school environment or
an exam centre, and the exams all follow the same
format. There are three levels: Starters, Movers and
Flyers. In terms of grammar and lexis, the Flyers
level is on par with the KET exams. The difference
is that, unlike the exams for older students, children
cannot fail the YLE. Every participant is given a
diploma with badges in Reading, Writing, Listening
and Speaking. The badges are coloured in
depending on the success of the candidate.
Exams follow a very set format. The children never
write on the exam papers, rather they answer on
an answer sheet, usually with one word answers.
They are tested in groups, except for the Speaking
session, where the test is given individually.
The Lighthouse YLE CD-ROM includes three
complete tests. These can be printed out in colour
and used for classroom practice; one set can be
used many times. The children write their answers
on a piece of paper except for the last page of the
Listening exams, which is used for colouring and
therefore can only be used once.
Tips
When doing the practice exams it is best to
recreate similar circumstances as when the
students will do the exam themselves, allow
them the same amount of time, and have them
practise exam techniques.
The ESOL web site has an abundance of exam
tips as well as more practice activities and
information about the exams.
The interactive activities on the CD-ROM are
divided into the different sections of the exams.
This way the teacher may choose to practice
the same exam question in various exams or
practise once complete exam, or pick and choose
activities from different exams.
Trinity College London, Graded Examinations in

Spoken English
The Trinity Examinations in Spoken English are
one-to-one oral examinations with a native English
speaking Trinity examiner, which test a students
speaking and listening skills. The exams provide
an official recognition of a students level of spoken
English and are accepted by universities and
employers worldwide. Candidates must be aged 7
or over.
The examinations are divided into a series of 12 oral
exams which test the students general conversation
and ability to discuss prepared topics. The exam
grades range from absolute beginner level to near
native fluency.
Apart from being a recognised meter of a students
skills in English, the examination also works as a
motivational tool encouraging students to practise
and try to communicate in English.
Tips
In each English lesson, ask general questions such
as What day is it today? Whats the weather like
today? Is it spring or summer? How old are you?
Encourage full answers whenever asking
questions. T: What day is it today? SS:Tuesday.
T: Its Tuesday.
When asking questions, if a child does not know
the answer, encourage them to say I dont know
or I cant remember or Im sorry, I dont know
the word in English, rather than remaining
silent or saying errr.
Make question practice fun. Do it in the form of a
team quiz and award points. Or ask questions at
the end of a lesson, whoever answers correctly
can line up first.
Practise for the exam in regular, short sessions
so candidates become more confident with the
style of question and can answer more rapidly
and naturally.

Elementary Stage (Grades 4, 5 and 6)
This is a 10 minute exam which has 2 phases;
a discussion on the candidates pre-prepared
topic and the conversation. Children should try
to maintain a fluid conversation rather than just
answering the examiners questions.
Tips for preparing the topic
Children should choose something that they
are genuinely interested in and can talk easily
about, (a hobby, pet, recent holiday).
They should collect all necessary photos or
pictures well before the exam to give them time
to plan the points and practice what to say.
Children should not learn their topic by heart as
they must speak naturally and spontaneously in
the exam.
When choosing a grade for candidates, consider

the childs personality as well as their level of
English. A shy child with a good level of English,
may not do as well as a more outgoing child who
speaks more spontaneously.
Allow children the possibility of presenting their

topic to the class and answering their questions
to give them more confidence.
The child should prepare several questions to
ask the examiner related to their topic.
Make a photocopy of the Topic Form for each
student. Check that their information and
spelling is correct before giving them the real
Topic Form to complete.
