message.
Write the first question on the board: Where does
Pedro live now? Elicit the answer (England) and
instruct the children to find and cross out England
from the words below. Tell the class to read the
questions and cross out the answers. Correct and
then elicit the message made by the remaining
words: Plant trees and save the rainforest.
2 Look and complete.
Write the first word on the board with gaps:
g a _ d _ _e _. Ask the children to look at the picture, ask
Whats his job? and elicit the answer (gardener). Invite
a volunteer to the front to fill in the missing letters. Then
ask the children to complete the remaining words.
Worksheet 3

to look at the word box and find words to complete
the speech bubble (experiments, scientist). Then
ask the class to look at the remaining speech
bubbles and complete them.
Extension

invite them to explain why or why not. Ask them about
Lukes project too. Ask them to think of different ideas
for a science project. Give out white paper and ask
each child to draw their idea for the science project
(for example, machines or robots that can do different
things). Write a model description of the project on the
board for the students to copy and complete: This is a

the Persians invaded Greece. They came to Marathon, a small town about
41 km from the city of Athens. The Athenians had a smaller army, but they
won the battle. A young soldier ran to Athens to tell the people about the
victory. He ran 40 km under the hot sun. When he arrived, he could only
say, Victory! Then, he collapsed and died.

The dodo bird lived on the island of Mauritius in the Indian Ocean near Africa 1 . It didnt fly and
it wasnt in danger. It made nests on the ground and ate the fruit that fell from trees 2 .
Unfortunately, its happy life changed in 1507 when Portuguese sailors arrived on the island 3 .
The dodos didnt know humans. They didnt know they were in danger. The fat birds, weighing up to
22 kilos, were a delicious meal for the sailors 4 .
Later, new species arrived on the island: pigs, monkeys and rats. The eggs of the dodo birds were
food for the new species 5 .
The combination of human exploitation and the introduction of new species caused the extinction

Have you got a computer? Do you surf the internet? Look at the results from this survey of
the most popular internet activities:
The most popular activity is sending e-mails: 91% of internet users do it. Next comes using
a search engine. Nine out of ten people use a search engine like Google TM or Yahoo TM to
find information on the net. Other popular activities include: finding a map (84%), checking the
weather (78%), and reading the news (72%).
Buying things online is less popular. Only 67% say that they use the internet for shopping and
63% buy plane tickets. Four out of ten people say they download games and videos. Only 22%
say they chat online! Playing the lottery is not very popular at all (only 4%).
What about you? What are your favourite internet activities?

Tips
When doing the practice exams it is best to
recreate similar circumstances as when the
students will do the exam themselves, allow
them the same amount of time, and have them
practise exam techniques.
The ESOL web site has an abundance of exam
tips as well as more practice activities and
information about the exams.
The interactive activities on the CD-ROM are
divided into the different sections of the exams.
This way the teacher may choose to practice
the same exam question in various exams or
practise once complete exam, or pick and choose
activities from different exams.
