The first thing that you need to know is when to use an article with a country, city, or
state. We are talking about the definite articles:
in English = the
Rule # 1: Cities
Regra # 2: Countries
You need to use a definite article (a, o, as, os) in front of country names.
1. a França
2. o Brasil
3. os Estados Unidos

1. A França tem muitas cidades bonitas = France has many beautiful cities
2. O Brasil é um país muito grande = Brazil is a very big country
3. Os Estados Unidos atraem muitos turistas = The United States attract many
tourists
If the name of the country ends in “a”, it takes the feminine article:

3. a Suécia
If the name of the country ends in a letter other than “a”, it takes the masculine article:
1. o Uruguai
2. o Peru

Regra # 4: States
The article is used with most Brazilian states, and most of the states are masculine:

There are two Brazilian states that take the feminine article:

1. When places that don’t take the article, use de and em:
São Paulo

2. With places that take the feminine article, use da (de + a) or na (em + a):

3. With places that take the masculine article, use do (de + o) or no (em + o):

❏ Sometimes you need the plural forms: dos, das, nos, nas.

You can use the same reasoning when using the prepositions de and em with other
verbs. For example:

4. Cristina é ______ Alemanha. A Alemanha é ______ Europa.
5. Antônio é ______ Portugal, mas ele mora ______ Brasil.
For example:
In Portuguese, prepositions agree in gender and number with the word that they refer to.
Example 1:
The definite article The, which is Portuguese is: A (because table is a feminine noun)
in Portuguese you need to contract the preposition Em with the article A. So you have:
Na = em + a = at the, in the, on the, used for feminine words

3. O leite está na geladeira. = The milk is in the fridge.
4. Ela está sempre com a cabeça nas nuvens. = She is always with her head in the
clouds.
1. Tinha muita gente no show. = There were a lot of people at the concert.
2. Meu casaco está no guarda-roupa. = My coat is in the wardrobe.
3. Eu moro no terceiro andar. = I live on the third floor.
4. Não sei o que fazer nos últimos dias das minhas férias. = I don’t know what to do
on the last days of my vacation.
